Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel at the WICKED 20th Anniversary Celebration

It’s the twentieth anniversary of the Broadway debut of Wicked and its two OG witches got themselves all fancied up for the green carpet. Original Galinda Kristin Chenoweth met up with original Elphaba Idina Menzel for the anniversary celebration, which is apparently a thing we do for Broadway plays now, although you certainly won’t hear us complaining about anyone finding new and innovative ways to get stars on red carpets.

Unfortunately, these witches clearly didn’t coordinate with each other. Or consult with anyone else, it would appear. Ladies, what is all this, what’s going on, what’s happening here?

K Chen, we loveya, but this is distressingly awful. We guess we can see why she’d choose that green for an ensemble, but it’s kind of a hideous shade of green. She’s teeny-tiny, which explains why she’d want to sport some massive platforms, but we’re afraid this pair is just awful, especially in tandem with that dress, which is shapeless and silly. Literally nothing about this look works and it distresses us.

As with Kristin’s Elphaba-green frock, we can kind of understand why she’d go in this direction, but we don’t think the results justify the choice. This has a dramatically witchy feel to it, although it seems more like something you’d see at Hogwarts than Shiz University. The plaid has an appealingly offbeat color story, but we tend to think it’s too overwhelming a print rendered in too stiff a fabric for a garment this large and body-swallowing. It looks like wrapping paper. She might have made it work, but that hot pink sash is a stupefying choice. We almost never make this suggestion, but a black sash would’ve been a much better choice. Those brooches don’t go with the coat at all.

It’s wild how they went in nearly completely opposite style directions. They don’t even look like they’re appearing in the same hemisphere, let alone the same event.
