Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have always been pretty good about getting high-fashion looks from major labels and giving them a country music spin for events like the Academy of Country Music Honors. We’ve always been of the opinion that you have to take an event, its attendees and its likely audience into account when you’re talking about red carpet style. In other words, the VMAs are not the Oscars are not the Country Music Awards are not the Latin Grammys, and so on. These two have always had a knack for working country style in a high-fashion, high-glam way. Except one of them seems to have lost their way on this try.

He looks great. The suit is fine and sharp, the shirt pops, and the countrified accessories are well-chosen. It’s a high-contrast, photogenic, stylish take on a classic look. She, on the other hand, may be trying to do too much. The dress is so specific in its style that we tend to think the runway styling was the only good way to go. We rarely land on that assessment, but one little change – from black tights to fishnets – gives it a whole different feel. It also breaks it up visually in a way that doesn’t work well with the somewhat severe hair and stark makeup. Granted, a less ostentatious boot might have helped here, but the whole thing feels off to us. Maybe if she loosened up the hair and softened the makeup a little? Or are we just trying too hard to make an unworkable dress work?
