The stars of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One hit the red carpet at the New York premiere and the style choices were surprisingly shiny. Speaking of surprising, we had to give Rebecca Ferguson her own spotlight post because that piece deserves closer examination.

The concept is sound, but the outcome just isn’t working. And by “concept,” we mean “wear something semi-dressy that shows off your arms in high summer.” We could absolutely get behind the idea of a sleeveless suit jacket on the right guy, in the right setting. But this one is giving him lady hips and it looks more like a chef’s jacket with the sleeves ripped off.

Normally, we might be side-eyeing such a shiny suit, but it actually really goes well with his hair. The shirt’s a nice contrasting color and the necklace looks great.

It’s not photographing well, which is always a risk when you go all-black for a red carpet. Looks okay from what we can tell, but obviously, it could’ve used some sort of contrast, print or interesting texture to break this up a little.

A body gown if ever there was one. It’s hard to argue with the results, so we won’t. We will, however, state that we think the straps are overdesigned and don’t hold up to scrutiny. They look interesting from far away, but less interesting the closer and the longer you look at them.

Love it. A place to keep her popcorn and soda while she’s watching the movie. Smart thinking. Wacky dress. She still looks pretty great in it, goofy design element aside.

Again, we’re not inclined to love a suit this shiny, but we have to appreciate how much he really went for it, from the blue suede tassel loafers to that masssive silk tie. Very little of it is to our tastes, but we like it for him.

Once again, the Mayor of Movie Town, the King of Cinema, the Duke of Blockbusters… looks a rumpled mess. Sad, really. No one but us cares about it and it won’t affect the movie’s box office in any way, but still. You look so bland, sir.

We don’t know… we’re generally inclined to love Schiaparelli’s brand of weirdness, but we don’t think this design works at all. It’s interesting from the front, in a minimalist sort of way, but it’s just odd from the back, producing less of the “Wow!” reaction it no doubt intends for more of a “Wut?” one.
