Princess Cathy – possibly the sportiest Princess of Wales ever – attended her beloved Wimbledon twice over the weekend. Cathy being Cathy, she kept things primly royal and rigidly on point. Your girl has a knack for making rich and bright colors look like neutrals. Yes, that was a bit of shade. On Saturday, she dressed as a tennis ball:

This is a variation of the Self Portrait dress she wore to re-open the National Portrait Gallery last month. We’ll repeat what we said then: A lightweight pleated skirt doesn’t look particularly right to us when paired with a tweed bodice. To that we’ll add that a tweed bodice with short sleeves also doesn’t make much design sense to us. But the silhouette’s very nice and we like the earrings. The shoes are bleh and we reiterate our stance that she is due for a hair rethink. This style looks borderline juvenile to us. On Sunday, she dressed in a salute to the court turf:

Before we get “corrected” on the matter, green and purple are the official colors of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, of which she’s a royal patron, hence the green dresses and the ever-present purple ribbon. As we keep saying, she’s never not rigidly appropriate and on theme, treating her royal fashion as an extension of her job. These are uniforms, in other words; self-imposed ones, to be sure, but uniforms nonetheless. This is fine, but the beige accessories bring it down.
