We almost never cover Cathy twice in one day unless she’s on some royal tour, but as Lorenzo noted when he suggested to Tom that we put aside some time for the Princess of Wales’ appearance at the Service of Thanksgiving today in Edinburgh, “She is wearing a goofy hat…” We never could say no to a goofy hat.

And so she is. The festivities in Edinburgh were essentially the Scottish coronation of Charles, so high royal formality was on the menu, which makes it a stark contrast to her sporty ’80s tennis look of yesterday. As the only person sitting there not draped in enough regalia to pitch a reasonable-sized tent, a princess has to to what she can to keep up. This is exceedingly appropriate, extremely matchy, and reeking of the past, which is how she likes her high royal drag. It’s been said many a time that all the royal family has to sustain them is tradition and image and she’s very committed to combining the two in her style choices. This entire outfit could’ve been worn by a female member of the family 80 years ago.
