Dove Cameron dedicated her Best New Artist VMA to queer kids who are struggling and for that, we have decided to lightly stan. We do not extend our good feelings to her outfit, however. You may be surprised to find that we really only object to two things regarding this look. If you can guess them, you are truly on this site too much and you should go look at trees or something for a little while. Just remember to come back here to be judgmental when you’re full up on all that healing nature and self-care nonsense.

The look is strong, in the sense that it fits in perfectly on the VMAs red carpet, has a bit of an edge to it, and doesn’t quite look like anything else worn that night. We really love the hair, makeup and mani, which are goth adjacent, but not too literal about it. The dog collar’s a little too big for our tastes, but it contributes to the hardness of the look, which isn’t a bad thing as far as we’re concerned. You ready for the objections? We hate that textile and we can’t believe she wore such a basic pair of open-toed shoes. There. We said it. And we’ll take our bitchiness further and ponder whether an agressive manicure like that really works with a totally clean pedicure. Not that we ever thought mani-pedis should match (how Barbie), but a little black on those toes would’ve helped. Regardless, it’s really about that chintzy textile. Forget our automatic dislike of most black-backed florals, it just seems like a weird choice to pair with all of those leather and bondage elements. We get the whole soft/hard thing the design is attempting, but we don’t really think it works.
