Well, they’ve done it again. Zendaya and Law Roach absolutely refuse to miss.
Years ago, we saw Zendaya as an up-and-comer based almost entirely on her aggressive career campaigning through the use of fashion. We’re not saying we would have predicted the Emmy-winning, Time 100 honoree, two-blockbusters-a-year career she’s made for herself, but we knew the girl had it in her to make herself a household name. We fielded quite a bit of “Why are you featuring this Disney girl so much? Is she paying you?” silliness at the time, but it was simply a matter of knowing a rising star when we see one. We don’t claim to always get it right or even that we get it right most of the time, but we definitely got it right with her.
She’s been helped tremendously by her collaborations with the hottest stylist in the business, Law Roach. The two of them have created some sort of alchemical combination that results in their best looks and their best work on the red carpet. This is gorgeous, but it’s also surprisingly conventional and low-key. Granted, the Time 100 Gala is a relatively sedate affair without the kind of attention-seeking you might find on an entertainment award or big-budget premiere red carpet. We love that she loves vintage and we love even more that she opted to wear Bob Mackie, a genius at the art of making famous women look even more gorgeous than they are, with a list of benefactors that stretch from Marilyn to Cher to Kim Kardashian. Love the color combination and simple silhouette, both of which set off the masterful color-blocking beautifully. Just a lovely, uncomplicated fashion moment. No notes.
