“The Lost Daughter” Director Maggie Gyllenhaal in Schiaparelli on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”

Maggie Gyllenhall is riding one of the highest waves of critical acclaim in her career for her directorial debut The Lost Daughter. Regardless of whether she gets any major awards nods for it, she’s earned the right for a little victory lap in high style. The choice of a Schiaparelli dress is a surprising one for her, although she likes her fashion with as much edge or weirdness as she can get away with, so perhaps our surprise is not so much that she wore it, but that she wasted it on this venue.

That’s just too fabulous for Jimmy Fallon and whatever tuba bullshit he’s foisting on her. Of course she’s a good sport and no one goes on this show without the expectation that they’ll be asked to jump through some flaming hoops like a trained poodle, but this dress deserved a red carpet, dammit. It’s not particularly telegenic (although we think it would take a great picture under the right circumstances) and it looks much better when she’s standing.
