Passing star Ruth Negga long ago proved to us that she can deliver looks that seem unlikely and impossible to pull off, but we’re still a little confused about this one.

Love the clunky footwear, love the autumnal textile, love the fullness of the skirt and the high neckline on her. We even love the belt. But we don’t care how trendy it is or why, not every style calls for a crop top or an exposed midriff. It’s not that we’re scandalized by the skin-baring; it’s that it seems so strange with an outfit full of chilly weather signifiers. We thought she must be incredibly comfortable in it to wear it for a sit-down on TV, but she honestly doesn’t look all that comfortable in the video. Having said all of that, it’s such an interesting look and so well suited to her that we find ourselves liking it quite a bit more than all our quibbles would suggest. Hence the confusion. She’s a fashion witch.
