After showing up at the Newport Film Festival in what may be the worst dress we’ve seen all year, rising star Thomasin McKenzie course-corrected for the LA premiere of Last Night in Soho. Sort of.
On the one hand, it’s a much better look to which she is much better suited than that awful Chanel frock. The color looks fantastic on her and the crystal and pailettes provide exactly the level of sparkle you’d want for a red carpet stroll. Gucci has a tendency to go way too heavy on the bling trim, but we don’t actually mind it here. We don’t like the cutout, but you probably knew that already. It’s not just the size and shape of it; that contrasting metallic mesh fabric only serves to make it more distracting. That’s the thing about cutouts. They’re fine, so long as they’re not executed in such a way that you can’t help staring at them. We really don’t like what little we can see of the shoes, but in our experience, most starlets under 25 need a few years to figure out which shoes are funky fun and which shoes photograph well (they rarely overlap; just ask any Fanning sister). We did a quick image search on her and it seems she overwhelmingly prefers to wear these tight, flat hairstyles on the red carpet. The ponytail is fun, but we wish she’d loosen up just a little and let her fly free.
