Late in the evening, when all hope had been lost, a cry went out over the twitters. “omg you guys rihanna’s here,” it proclaimed. And thus did the world sigh in unison. Now this weird mid-September thing could be called a proper Met Gala; now that the world’s most popular and fabulous billionaire had arrived.
At first our delight took the alternate form of disappointment because it looked like they just wrapped themselves in duvets. Was it a commentary on our long lockdown nightmare? Was it a visual representation of our collective depression over the stresses of the past few years? Probably not. First, once he dropped the blankie, he revealed a fairly shop look underneath. It’s hard to find an alternate take on black tie that looks interesting, but we love this all the way down to the jewels in his shoes.
We loved her look from the start, but it was when Lorenzo noted that she’s serving a kind of modern, 21stC take on a silent screen goddess, like Gloria Swanson or Theda Bara, right down to the bejeweled headdress and the rather witty take on a turban: the humble knit beanie. It is the ultimate in hi-lo, old-new fashion and only she could make it look that fabulous.
