Miley Cyrus in Schiaparelli and 16Arlington at Saturday Night Live

Miley offered herself up for some sidewalk pap shots last week (an act of selflessness for which we are truly grateful in these sidewalk sashay-less times) as she was in rehearsals for her Saturday Night Live appearance and we can’t help noticing that her paparazzi ensembles were a bit more outrageous than anything she wore for the show itself. We’re not entirely sure what that means, since we’d never claim she was the type of star whose more about the attention than the work. If anything, it seems like she has a sharp understanding of when she can get away with the attention-seeking stuff and when she needs to just hunker down and let her talent do the work. Granted, it’s not like she went totally basic and demure for her stagewear.

It’s not like dinner-plate boobs are subtle, after all. As much as we love some good Schiaparelli weirdness, this is perhaps a little bit too distracting for a TV performance. The big … stomach thing (new fashion term) is made worse by untucking the shirt from the skirt. The whole look has this weird blend of office-wear, fetish-wear and some sort of medical device.

This is… fine? Okay? It looks like a bunch of plastic party leis got turned into a gown, but that sort of trashy-punk glamour is kind of her thing. Unfortunately, this just comes off forgettably generic in a lot of ways. Neither of these looks are bad; they just don’t really play to her strengths or pop onscreen. A slightly surprising letdown.
