A darkly dramatic Duchess!
Blunt, bitchy assessment: It’s an absolutely gorgeous black lace gown nearly ruined by its light-colored lining. Sorry, Duchess. Black lace lined in anything but black just looks cheap to us. We may make concessions for dark greys or blues, but we’ll never truly like a light neutral lining like the one being deployed here. A light lining is ostensibly chosen so that the lace design can pop out, but you often wind up seeing too much of the dress underneath the dress. It looks especially strange when paired with unlined sleeves.
We do love this gown, though. We’re not inclined to love an abundance of black lace because it can come off funereal or fusty, but this is a gorgeously dramatic design. She rarely wears black to formal occasions. She’s definitely made for sporting rich or bold colors, but it’s nice to see her switch things up just a bit.
