Part ONE is here! The Judgment Train keeps rolling along!

In a year of robot suits and tennis ball dresses, it could only be this Zendaya look that makes the cut for us this year. Ironically, despite our raging dislike of theme-dressing, we chose the theme-iest Zendaya dress of the year, for the “Garden of Time”-themed Met Gala. But come on, theme or no, this is a pure stunner of a look. It’s also the third look of the list this year with a veil (Nicola Coughlan and Rosamund Pike being the other two). We’re not sure what that means except that if you want to get on T Lo’s good side, apparently a veil will help.

The King of the red carpet, in one of the most glorious menswear looks we’ve ever seen. Enough said.

Margot Robbie in Balmain at the Critics’ Choice Awards

It must have been such a relief for her to get away from all of the pink of the Barbie promo tour. She followed it up with a look that spoke of romance, with a little bit of a hard-edged sexiness to it. No one ever made leather flowers look so chic.

Lana Del Rey in Alexander McQueen at the Met Gala

Veil Number Four! We swear we haven’t suddenly adopted an ultra conservative “Women must cover their sinful hair and faces” take on fashion, but we just love ourselves some fashion drama and this year, apparently it was all about the veils. Lana Del Rey may have been the one attendee at this year’s Met Gala to fully embody the themes of decay and nostalgia of “The Garden of Time,” in this dreamy, weird, slightly off-putting piece of fantasy fashion.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior at the DUNE: PART TWO London Premiere

Veil Number FIVE! Also, perhaps another bit of theme-dressing, since she’s essentially dressed like a space nun at a Dune premiere. As we’ve noted many a time before, she’s at her fashion best when she leans into her own looks. Audrey Hepburn was a fashion icon in part because she understood that the extreme nature of her own looks could be served particularly well by high fashion pieces. When ATJ follows that same lesson, the results are often spectacular.

More to come in Part THREE!
