Good hair and talent aside, we remain underwhelmed by Mr. Mendes. He’s working with a pretty stacked deck in his favor, which is why we tend to find his style choices dull and restrained. He has a uniform for awards shows and this is pretty much it:
An open shirt, maybe some chains, maybe even another shirt underneath, and a too-small slightly generic suit. Everything is usually high quality and the looks tend to come off extremely styled and curated, but the results tend to blur together. Everything’s in place but everything’s non-threatening and nothing’s memorable. It’s fine. He’s got a look and he likes sticking to it. If nothing else, we think it makes a pretty good representation of his personality, which also strikes us as restrained and extremely curated. We’re not trying to be bitches here. We just think he comes off like one tightly wound spring. Boy needs to loosen the hell up a little.
