Miss Kiki did that thing we love to cover most when we’re covering red carpets. She took the occasion of her critically acclaimed performance in the critically acclaimed If Beale Street Could Talk as an opportunity to snag every bit of eye-popping, statement-making, here-I-am-world fashion suddenly at her fingertips and wore them all, damn near flawlessly, so you wouldn’t forget her name. Brava, sweetie. Welcome to the big leagues. Alas, with great power also comes great judgment from snippy bitches like us.

She really had us until she turned around. From the front, all our complaints about giant bows and poofs this season vanish. It looks chic and glamorous in a restrained sort of way. Then she turns around and it’s a baby carrier, for some reason. Definitely could’ve done without that part.

We think her fashion thing is all about these high-impact, slightly overdesigned looks. We can’t really argue with that, because both of these dresses have at least one too many elements to them and yet she’s working the shit out of each of them, not letting anything about them overwhelm her. Yes, the right cup and strap are overdesigned to a nearly ridiculous extent. Yes, there’s too much trim and various elements are introduced in a discordant, haphazard manner. Despite all the nonsense going on with the design, she is SLAYING in it. If you’re an up-and-coming actress and you’ve got a distinct knack for making eye-popping fashion look amazing, you’d be a fool not to run with that as part of your self-promotion.
