We’re sorry to announce that we called it yesterday when we noted Adam Driver’s get-down brown suit at the Gotham Awards. Celebrity men are going to start making the poop-colored suit a thing on the red carpet.

But we’ll say this: First, it’s the kind of look well-suited to certain types of actors; especially if those actors have a history of playing period-movie creeps (see below) and will always look like porn producers no matter what they’re wearing (see above). Second, we don’t have anything against the brown suit per se. We’d normally be excited that a new menswear color trend was sweeping the red carpet, since the vast array of black, blue and gray suits we tend to see day in and day out tend to be a bit depressing. But we maintain that you have to make good decisions to keep a brown suit from looking old or sleazy. The first thing to avoid is thinking of it the same way you’d think of a blue or gray suit. In other words: no light or white dress shirts and no businesslike ties. Those choices will always take it straight to “used car salesman.” Instead, celeb guys on red carpets should treat brown suits like tweeds. Pick rich colors, patterns and textures to pair with it. Matthew? This ain’t it.
