Reese Witherspoon & Nicole Kidman at the “Big Little Lies” For Your Consideration Event

Posted on July 27, 2017

Ladies, congratulations on your nominations. We loved Big Little Lies like a little gay boy loves sequins. Now go and take your victory laps.

PinOof.

Well. This didn’t exactly go as planned, did it?

PinThis isn’t a terrible dress on it’s own merits, but it’s the one kind of dress Reese should know by now to stay away from: the stiff, blocky dress. She needs either body-con or well-chosen separates for her shape and size. That bell-like skirt and those huge sleeves do nothing good for her. And the textile is heavy and serious for this time of year. Lady, this is your big, happy moment and you look like you’re too distracted by your badly chosen dress to care.

Oh, well. You’ve got tons of pre-Emmy events to make it up. Go and pick out your “Power of Women” luncheon and “It’s an Honor To Be Nominated” dinner ensembles now, girl. Remember: either super body-con, or Country Club Chic. Those are your briefs. You know this. You can do it. We have faith in you.

PinYikes.

In some ways, we feel responsible. We’ve been telling Nic for the better part of two years now that she’s the rare lady celebrity who should make black the number one feature of her style choices. It tends to dramatically set off her looks and coloring. We’d argue that it turned out to be good advice for her, since she really did start upping its usage and making some fun and dramatic Disney Witch-style outings on the red carpet.

But there’s always a downside to any piece of good advice and here it is in action. Miss Woman, you look better in black than most other people and most other colors. That does not, however, mean that any ol’ black schmatta’s gonna turn beautiful the second you put it on. The combo of sheer top and lace skirt is so incredibly stale and played out at this point. Factor in a too-tight bodice and what we would consider an unfortunate hair choice and this just looks bad, tip to toe, from where we’re sitting.

Actually her toes are fine.
