Hi, Dakota?

We’re going to have to confiscate your hat and shoes, because Hollywood hierarchy determines that current BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS OSCAR WINNER Lupita Nyong’o could really use the help with her outfit. Perhaps next year, after your soft porn movie comes out, you’ll get to snatch someone else’s accessories, but for now, give ’em up. Sorry.

Oh, and your outfit’s really cute! We think there’s a flip-flop bin over near the first aid tent. Unless you want Lupita’s ugly wedges? No? We didn’t think so. Off you go, then.

Loving the patterned black & white dresses at this event! I *need* a pair of those shoes ASAP!

      • DebbieLovesShoes

Does anyone know where I could get those shoes? The Uncles didn’t say….

    • Coleen

I like that dress loads better than Lupita’s. Please don’t make me relinquish my BK badge.

      • Karen Belgrad

Me too. It doesn’t have that shape-obliterating peplum.

        • P M

That peplum looked like a second skirt attached to the first.

      • Janet B

I’m trying to decide whether it’s a better dress or better suited to the wearer.
        Regardless, she looks cute.

      • alyce1213

I agree, I like the shape much better. And the hat and shoes as well.

    • Daisy Walker

Sorry, but if Lupita’s look is an overall no, this is a HELL NO. To all of it.

    • Glam Dixie

The two dresses are VERY similar but DJ wins the accessory challenge for sure.

    • Susan Sontag

Ugh, I think a cute pair of flip flops would look better with that dress than those hideous black and white numbers. And comb your hair.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Was there a black & white dress code? I know hats are considered de rigeur at polo matches. (And possibly linen suits for the men.)

    • @Biting Panda

*THIS* is the hat you like? It’s worse than ironic fedora, it’s privileged Amish. Nothing in my world makes any kind of sense any more.

      • P M

I don’t think the hat is better, but it’s better suited than what Lu was wearing.

        • Qitkat

*grins* for using Lu (it’s part of my real name), so I have the softies for all who share it.

          • P M

I love the name Lu :). It’s also a nickname of a dear friend. Lovely woman with a hell of a story. Tough as nails but a softie.

          • marlie

Lu is the last name of a dear friend, so it makes me smile too. :)

      • Daisy Walker

Exactly. Up is down. Black is white. Dogs and cats, sleeping together.

    • RescueMe23

Did she and Lupita coordinate their outfits? They are strikingly similar.

    • hughman

“Just get in the gondola, I’ll explain later.”

      • Lucía Gavello

“Just take a shoe and paddle, there’s no time”

      • Qitkat

Dammit, I need to get back to Getting Shit Done. (tm formerlyAnon), but I keep getting sucked in becuz of comments like this! It’s my training ground for learning to be even one-tenth as clever. Glad to see you back in fine form, hughman :)

        • formerlyAnon

I am SO honored, though really, you know it didn’t originate with me.

On that topic I had a very productive morning so I’m thinking I’m going to go for Getting Shit Done in June. Enough consecutive months of this and I might pass for a functional, responsible adult once you scratch the surface for the first time in years.

    • Danielle

I’m shocked that I kind of like those shoes. Clearly I was lobotomized at some point this morning.

    • luludexter

Those shoes! I need them NOW!

    • MaryMcClelland

This sounds tacky, but I wish you could see the little strip of skin at the tie like on the model’s. It kind of breaks up the pattern a bit and gives credence to the tie, otherwise it’s barely noticeable. Also, I don’t really like the shoes.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Those are some adorable shoes. Love the hat.

    • Valerie Little

Princess Kate could so rock this look.

    • Sarah

Hat’s a little too Harold Hill for me, and I want to straighten out her bust – that crooked bustline and belt are bugging me. Also, her necklace looks like a cobweb, and not in a good way.

      • FibonacciSequins

She should have left off the belt – it’s confusing. And the necklace is just too delicate for that pattern. It does look cobwebby.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana F.

I want those shoes so bad.

    • kimmeister

I feel like I just saw this dress somewhere, like a post in the last 2 weeks, but I can’t seem to find it. Who wore this???

    • FibonacciSequins

I like Lupita’s hat better than this straw boater. The shoes the model wore are much more simpatico with the dress. These shoes might be okay with – something else. Maybe black trousers, or jeans?

Imagine the optic effect of Dakota and Lupita standing together at this event in their black and white patterned dresses.

    • AmeliaEve

Was there a dress code for the party? Black and white sundresses plus big hats all around?

    • StillGary

she isn’t strictly soft porn — she was in the 21 Jump Street movie : D but yeah, by all means, take her shoes!

    • SewingSiren

      Looks just like her dad.

    • lunchcoma

Oh, this is a much better take on Young Hip Woman at a Stuffy Polo Match than Lupita’s attempt. I’m a little surprised, since my vague memories of Dakota are that she’s not all that well-dressed. Maybe she’s paying more attention with the movie coming out?

    • DuBey2

Love this look: IN. Oh, and I’ll have to look for that flip-flop bin at the next outdoor event I attend? What? They only have them at Champagne-sponsored events??

    • quiltrx

Her shoes are way better than Lupita’s and I love this dress too. Rock that black and white, girls!

    • Anna

Hat is Fraulein Maria, “I Have Confidence.” Otherwise, meh.

I can’t wait until she starts poledancing for her BDSM unintentional comedy though.

      • demidaemon

It will be quite a show, that’s for sure.*

*This comment can relate to the poledance, the movie, or both. Your choice.

    • StillGary

I can’t love the whole look as I should I don’t know why — it’s fetching in a Pretty Woman-at-the-Polo-match-kind-of-way. Oooh, I hope no one spoiled her day by revealing her occupation!

    • Qitkat

Total agreement! Syncing BKTLO mind meld, in 3…2…1…

    • OhSheila

Hate the shoes, don’t mind the hat.

    • LadyVimes

I wish I was able to wear madeline hats. They are so cute.

    • suzq

I didn’t get the memo about black and white prints last weekend. MY BAD!

    • Mothra

She needs to ditch the Anne of Green Gables hat.

      • ktr33

        Yes! Exactly.

Cute dress, but agree that the “belt” ruins the nice lines of the drop waist as seen on the model. Anne of Green Gables is all wrong — the tan straw and the bright white of the dress — just doesn’t go. I can figure out if I hate the shoes or not. And the necklace is a misstep, but at least a barely noticeable one.

    • The Versatile Chef

Wow, her face is the perfect mash-up of her parents.

    • Julie

I’ll take the sunglasses. Help is needed here too. LOL.

    • unbornfawn

See looks really cute. I like that hats are coming back, frustrated that stylists are clueless as how to deploy them.

    • MartyBellerMask

This is cute. And WOWEE, does she look EXACTLY like one would expect someone with that genetic material to look. I mean, perfect blend of Don & Melanie.

    • formerlyAnon

Oh YAY. Who is it here that has a “British cheekbone harem” or some such? Because several of my favorite Brits-with-cheekbones seem usually to be photographed at this event, so time to troll Getty Images.

Oh – I think she looks cute. Would prefer a sandal or strappier version of the shoe, but overall, I like. She looks a bit straggly in the hair and sweaty in the face, but it’s an outdoor event.

    • Anna

Those shoes are giving me the willies.

    • julnyes

She really looks like her father.

    • marlie

I prefer the hat that Lupita is wearing, but these shoes would be cute on her.

    • Stacy C

Molly Ringwald called.. she wants her hat back.

    • http://weirdinedgewise.blogspot.com ONEWEIRDWORD

Aw c’mon, guys, be nicer to her. She looks super cute.

    • in a pickle

Super cute. She’s at an outdoor event so the hat is totally appropriate and she gets to keep it. :)

    • thatch pheasant

      Really really nice. Brava.

    • Zuber

i like the dress on the model better!

    • J. Preposterice

Has anyone ID’d the shoes? I love love love them.
