Stephen Amell at the CW Network’s New York 2014 Upfront Presentation

Posted on May 16, 2014

Bless his heart. He’s always trying – and he does look cute – but the details are always a bit off.

He looks like an algebra teacher. In 1960. In the closet.

First: black suit, blue shirt, darker blue bowtie? That doesn’t make for a great picture. Second: the fit is off in the jacket and the pants, and we should see shirt cuffs peeking out. Third: we’re not experts on this sort of thing, but we’re pretty sure that’s not the right collar for a bow tie. It sits too high on the neck. Look at the way the placket is buckling right under the tie.

He keeps wanting to do the PeeWee look, but the fact of the matter is, that’s for much skinnier guys than him. He’s too muscled for this cut of suit. He should be rocking the three-pieces and fat neckties. He should also not be afraid of color and pattern. He’s got the looks to handle it.

Poor boy. Someone should just go and help him out of those clothes….:P

it seriously hard to hate on him for trying

      • demidaemon

It is. But we can offer gentle, loving critiques and offers to undress and redress him.

    • Sarah

That looks less like a man’s bowtie and more like the bow you put around a kitten’s neck (<—–). Maybe it's cuz he's cute that I think that, but still.

      • Anna

Church giggles at my desk, can’t un-see that now!

      • Fuchsiaforever

As cute as your kitty avatar! :-)

        • Sarah

Miss Mandy thanks you. She is truly the cutest thing on four legs, no doubt :)

          • Fuchsiaforever

            I wish I weren’t allergic to cats, dammit! :(

    • Pablo

The suit is definitely too small on him but I just saw the Arrow finale and he can do no wrong in my eyes.

      • WendyD

That finale! I kept screaming at my TV.

        • Pablo

I’m just glad Sara is safe, I thought she was going to die for sure. Also, OLICITY.

          • WendyD

            DO YOU UNDERSTAND??

    • MilaXX

The suit reads navy to me. No matter because the jacket is too tiny. I would love this if the jacket fit and the tie was an orange stripe.

      • gabbilevy

SO. TINY. It’s like he put on Colton Haynes’ jacket instead.

        • VicD

I thought maybe it was Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s suit. I mean literally, because it’s too small. Can’t you just picture Mitchell Pritchett wearing this to the office?

        • stephbellard

I bet Colton would love to lend Stephen more than a jacket…

    • WendyD

I just ADORE him and his personality just makes him all the more attractive.
And I know he can/probably should look better but maybe Colton and Barrowman can give him some tips for more public appearances. He’s jut not *that* into fashion, he’d wear the same Nocking Point t-shirt everyday for a week if he could get away with it. (and with looks like his, he can)

      • Trent

Completely agree. And TLo are 100% right about this tragic outfit, but he’s just. so. handsome. The show’s going into its third season — can’t he (or the CW) afford a better stylist?

    • WendyD

Dearest Uncles, you’ve given us Colton and Stephen, PLEASE TELL ME WE’RE GETTING BARROWMAN NEXT to complete the ‘Arrow’ hotties set!

      • FibonacciSequins

I’ve never heard of this show outside of comments here, but if John Barrowman is on it I must start watching!

        • Glam Dixie

I really enjoy JB, but I can’t deal with this show. I only know sort of what is going on because I sit and read a book and catch bits and pieces while Mr. Glam Dixie watches. I don’t get the love, I think it’s so silly, almost as bad as 24, but obviously someone likes it. I do pay more attention when John Barrowman is on my screen.

          • Grumpy Girl

My son loved it, until this season, when he felt there was too much relationship stuff and angst to fast forward through. Since the man-candy is not pulling him, there went that. (Realizing I could, in theory, watch things I pick, but then I have to hear others complain about not getting to use the tv.)

      • GenieinTX

And Barrowman had some style at the upfronts. I love that man. That’s the post I want to see. Stephen’s jacket looks way to small, but hey he sort of smiled.

    • Glam Dixie

Aw, he borrowed his little brother’s suit.

    • Anna

Ah, bless him. His grade is: C+, room for improvement, but I’ll take 1960 algebra teacher over normcore/Johnny Depp “Don’t give a fuck, but I actually REALLY REALLY DO.”

      • demidaemon

In total agreement. At least he is trying, but not in a way that makes us want to throw rotten tomatoes at him. It’s more of a gentle, “There, there. I know you are trying, but here’s how you can do better. I’ll help. ;)”

        • Anna

I finally started watching Arrow after continually hearing “Something, something…shirtless hunks” and I hereby offer to help Stephen in any way I can.

    • DTLAFamilies

Can’t his mommy see he’s outgrown that jacket?

    • JauntyJohn

Again, the sum is greater than the whole of its parts.
The overall effect is absolutely charming.
I really, REALLY wish you’d shave your neck, Stephen, but somehow, against all reason, I know this is the fashion for some.
He looks dapper and confident and frankly adorable. He just needs a good tailor to smarten up the details.

    • SugarSnap108

      But he’s so precious.

    • deelup

I think the Pee Wee look requires a better fit than this. I think he could pull it off, but not with such boring choices. This is less Pee Wee and more, ‘I’m waiting tables at a banquet and this is the only uniform they had left.’

    • conniemd

The only thing more adorable than Stephen Amell with that cute, kinda self-conscious smile would be to have him with a dog. Golden Retrievers preferred.

      • WendyD

You should see him with his infant daughter!! I’m not even a “babies are cute” person, but OMG. MELT!

    • marlie

This is a little TOO Pee Wee. It’s veering off from one’s own look, or a look that appropriate for an event/setting (Kentucky Derby) to an affectation. It doesn’t suit him.

      • P M

If the tie had been polka-dotted, in pink, and if he’d worn a straw hat, it might have worked.

      • Imasewsure

He’s got kind of a Pee Wee & Young Colonel Sanders combo thing going there… maybe not the direction to keep taking although it’s different at least

    • Tricia Rose

I’m the only one who can’t stand the neck beard? gross.

    • Imasewsure

“He looks like an algebra teacher. In 1960. In the closet.” Yup

    • Fuchsiaforever

Is the hair on the neck acceptable? Looks weird…Isn’t he supposed to shave that? Is that not the equivalent of a woman showing up at the beach in a bikini WITHOUT a bikini wax? What’s the correct etiquette? #curious

    • Wink

All of the little mistakes add up to a huge mess. He should just strip and start over. Immediately.

    • BLauD

      Bless his heart.

    • http://angrynerdgirl.net/ Jessi03

Was that jacket made for an elf? Seriously, it’s sooooo teensy on him!

    • Spicytomato1

The jacket might be too small but I am a sucker for a bow tie, even a shiny blue costumey-looking one, and he is by far the cutest thing I’ve seen all day.

    • Anapestic

On the one hand, I think that the jacket torso is too short but the sleeves are too long and how is that even possible?

On the other hand, I just feel like any time he covers his torso with anything (except maybe the strap to his quiver), it’s a big step down, so why bother trying?

    • revlisacat

He looks like he lost his luggage and needed to borrow clothes from a few friends–sad because he has such a great body!

    • Danielle

I’d like to undo that bowtie with my teeth.

    • crash1212

Dear Men of the World and/or on Red Carpets: I no longer wish to see shirt bellies. Love, Crash

      • Pennymac

        “Shirt Bellies”. YES!

    • ElaineMarie34

I sorta think he shouldn’t even be in a suit. He’s so attractive, but in a jeans and black t-shirt kind of way. But as it is, he’s too boyish in the face for the bow tie – he looks like a Catholic school sixth-grader dressed up against his will.

    • mjude

he will be the “alan” to my fan bingbing doll

    • Let it out

No light blue shirts unless you’re going to your desk job in the ’90s.

    • B_C_J

I think the shirt is buckling under the bow tie because it’s poorly made or it’s too tight. I agree that nothing fits properly but he gets an A for effort & for wearing real bow ties.

    • mrspeel2

Usually, Stephen can do no wrong in my eyes but I gotta say, this time, I’ve got to agree with your “He looks like an algebra teacher. In 1960. In the closet.”! That quote made me spit out my coffee & laugh out loud!

    • traceyishere

Hugo Boss for him, not Thom Browne.

    • unbornfawn

Looks like he is growing out of his suit.

    • demidaemon

Yeah, he is not meant for the bowtie. Kudos for trying and everything, but he just can’t pull it off.

    • jw_ny

He could definitely be the type to pull off a bow tie, but that’s not the shirt for it, nor also, he’s not right for the “pee wee” look. His is more the nerdy professor type…tweed and bow tie (?)…looser and less restrained.

I really do appreciate his consistent willingness to try and bring something interesting to the RC with each of his appearances though…just not this.

    • JynxTheCat

His personal style does SO MUCH to endear him to me. He is such a charisma suck on his show that I quit watching all together. He just needs these things tailored to him. He is a thickly muscled shrot guy and all this is making him stumpy but I don’t think he needs to default to prescribed attire to work it out, just a little fitting.

    • Man Dala

Leave him alone, he looks like an edible cake doll custom-made for my (gay) wedding. I’d eat it him a mouthful.

    • jay

I am not an expert, but I am a huge bowtie dork and someone who has a hell of a time finding clothes that fit so my feeling is that it looks like his collar might just be too tight. I have this problem in shirts a lot and it seems to happen when the collar is just a smidge too tight so you have to kinda wiggle that top button closed and then it never quite straightens out. SO FRUSTRATING. (or, related to that, a new shirt where the buttons are super tight against the fabric, so that the buttonhole kinda gets caught up on there and doesn’t move.)

and I totally agree with the kitten bowtie assessment. The concept of a bowtie is really cute with his face but he needs a print somewhere in order to make this not look he’s at his mom’s fourth wedding or something. Don’t worry, darling, I have an entire drawer of slightly insane ties I can lend you.

And while I’m rambling? If he got rid of the jacket and did, say, a vest instead, I think it might be pretty awesome.
