Stripes! What a cheeky, high-fivin’ duchess! Isn’t it in like the Magna Carta or something that the royal family can only wear solids, tartan plaids, and the occasional floral?

The brooch is very pretty and we have no doubt that it’s historically or locally important in some way, but from a pure style perspective, it instantly makes that kicky, modern coat look a little grandma. Proof: someone gave her a stuffed corgi, obviously mistaking her for the Queen. Maybe that’s why Cathy insists on flashing her butt so much; so that people will stop mistaking her for her 87-year-old grandmother-in-law.

It’s a theory.

Anyway: super-cute coat, Cath.

      That coat is amazing.

    • Coleslaw McGraw

I read that the brooch was a private wedding gift from a friend. But OMG that coat. It is really very lovely. But I am kind of glad I don’t live in a place where you need a wool coat at the end of May. I also think she is going too heavy on the eyeliner. Time to lighten that up Cath.

      • anneshirley

We had frost this morning here in (Southern) New England! :) The only upside is great coats. (Agree 100% on the eyeliner).

        • Constant Reader

Yep, 39 here in Western RI at 6:30 a.m. Ugh.

Also totally agree on the eyeliner.

    • smh4748

Beautiful coat, and it looks so much better without the belt that the model is working.

I know brooches are totally grandma, but I really wish they’d make a comeback. They are so interesting and pretty! Ah well. Maybe someday. Or, when I’m around 60, I’ll start wearing them anyway because they’ll be age appropriate. :)

      • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

And since its a Celtic knot brooch its totally on point for the event.

      • kimmeister

Not to mention that the model’s belt is in a clashing red.

      • Anna

I love brooches! I collect vintage ones and do wear them if they work with the outfit.

      • Jessica Freeman

I always wear a brooch on my coats. I also used to clip them to headbands and wear them. It’s harder to be in your 30’s and rock a brooch and it look current.

        • imspinningaround

I like wearing brooches and I’m in my 30s. Know how I make them look a little less mumsy? I wear THREE brooches! Pick three that look good/interesting together and cluster them together at the shoulder or on the collar.

          • Glam Dixie

Cute idea! I going to try that.

          • Beardslee

Yeah, if you cluster them they can tell a story. It’s a rare day that I’m not wearing one.

          • KateShouldBeWorking

Agreed! Plus then you can pretend that they’re metals you earned for being different flavors of awesome.

          • 3boysful

You would have loved seeing Madeleine Albright’s collection. She had some lovely ones, and some scary ones that she used to frost the leaders of other countries with which we had problems.

            • imspinningaround

My mom has the catalog from the Madeline Albright pin exhibit!

          • random_poster

I have three brooches that are camels – one is larger than the others, so they look like mama and babies. Whenever anyone asked, I would say they represent the modern single parent camel family. I haven’t worn them in ages. Although there are three, they are the literal definition of mumsy!

            • Skippymom1

Now THAT is fun right there. “The modern single parent camel family.” I would stand in awe and covetness.

        • barbarienne

My brooches are all swords and axes and such. They definitely don’t read “grandma.”

      • Glam Dixie

I collect vintage brooches and I pin them on my coats, and sometimes on my purse or any cute jackets or sweaters I’m wearing. I get tons of compliments on them, I don’t think they are grandma at all. Everyone always tells me that they have some and they wish they thought to wear them. I wear what I love, screw what other people like.

        • Beardslee

And because so few people wear them, you can pick them up for a song.

          • Glam Dixie

Yep, I got a great one about a month ago for $3.00, but usually no more than $10 or $12.

        • KateShouldBeWorking

I love broaches but it took me a while to get out if the white “crystal” rut; I use my colored broaches much more frequently.

          Embrace the broach, BKs!

          • Glam Dixie

My favorite is two tiny marcasite and crystal penguins with jade eyes. Looks gorgeous on everything.

            • KateShouldBeWorking

That sounds darling! I’m envious but happy they have a lovely home.

            • smayper

              ENVY! I love jade.

          • Lori

I inherited a really pretty one with spring green stones from my mom. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get the clasp fixed so I can wear it.

          • aesteve212

I have some bright enamel ones – I find big and bold is the way to go! I agree too that they are often reasonably priced, since not too many people wear them.

        • Kayceed

Me too – coats, jackets, sweaters and hats – and if the occasion is fancy, I’ll anchor one into my updo.

          • Skippymom1

Hats are definitely my favorite place to wear mine. Second would be my wool coats, but, alas, that is only for the winter.

        • marlie

I have some that I’ve purchased, but I also have a few that were my grandmother’s; I have some favorite from my mom’s collection, but she’s not ready to part with them yet. :P

          • smayper

I don’t know what happened to them, but I got my grandmother’s, mostly sparkly ones that were intended to be worn on your black velvet opera coat…and one gorgeous jet one that was my great-grandmother’s, and was meant to be pinned at your top button. Very Downton Abbey.

      • Yolanda

I wear a brooch from time to time…my brooches were actually my grandmother’s. Keeps her near. So if I’m feeling retro, a pin on a brooch.

        • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

I also wore my grandmother’s brooch until it fell off my jacket and I lost it. *sob*

          • Yolanda

Oh dear! I’m sorry to hear that. :(

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I love brooches too, no outfit is complete without one, and as for what anyone else thinks piffle! :) They are so not Grandma, Michelle Obama proved that years ago. Brooches are in and should be worn whenever one feels the inclination. ;)

        • smayper

Yeah, FLOTUS brought them back in a big way. The woman rocks my world.

      • amf0001

one day I woke up and was 50 years old and suddenly had to wear scarves with everything. Otherwise I get a stiff neck and a headache. Weird how that happens…

      • decormaven

Wear the brooch and who cares what it reads, as long as it pleasures you and accentuates the garment in a pleasing way. Life is too short for what “they” think.

        • smh4748

Thanks for the vote of support! I do have one I wear occasionally, I bought it for super cheap to be a part of my Joan Harris outfit last Halloween. It’s fun. :)

      • marlie

I love brooches! I sometimes wear them in the winter precisely because they brighten up my boring grey everyday winter coat.

      • Sophie

I recently bought a brooch flamingo brooch, and my mother immediately told me that “Pink Flamingo” was the title of an old gay porn movie. I haven’t dared wear it since.

        • Glam Dixie

Ha! a: Inquiring minds would like to know, how does your mom know this? b: All the more reason to wear it!

          • Sophie

One of her best friends is gay and came out when he was 16 years old, I imagine there were some discussions about this kind of movies… And thanks for the encouragement, you’re absolutely right!

    • http://attiresmind.blogspot.com/ Kiltdntiltd

Soooooo glad she wore it unbelted.

      • SierraDelta

I was going to express my sincere thanks to her for leaving it unbelted, too!

    • PastryGoddess

The fact that she needs to wear this in late May is disturbing. Doesn’t it get hot as hell in England?

      • xmixiex

not really. hot as hell is kinda rare in england… most buildings don’t even have AC.

        • eandh99

this is in Scotland, the coat is totally weather appropriate, and the dress underneath is even wool.

        • PastryGoddess

Ok…that is a whole new world

    • M_E_S

I want her coat collection. I covet it.

    • Cyprienne Zed

Perfect Human Being, meet Perfect Coat. LUFF IT SO.

    • Danielle

      She can Do No Wrong.

    • Denise Rambo

SO much better without the belt. The brooch might been better on the collar.

      • Judy_J

I thought the brooch would look better placed on her collar, too.

    • KinoEye

Hehe… did the uncles maybe mean “international *outer*wear model?” Because this is the first I’m hearing of the Duchess modeling her skivvies :-)

The coat is absolutely fabulous, as usual.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think the Daily Telegraph printed a picture of her with her skirt blowing up. I didn’t see it, so I don’t know how “cheeky” it was.

        • KinoEye

Ooooh, I see now. Without that context, I was rather puzzled!

          • Alloy Jane

Yeah, I thought I might be missing something. And that something apparently is a picture of a public wardrobe malfunction.

            • DesertDweller79

I saw it yesterday on Twitter. Definitely cheeky!

        • Yolanda

The picture was quite “cheeky.” I think she is more of an international thong model based on that particular picture.

      • sugarkane105

A German tabloid unfortunately posted pics of her bum as her skirt was lifted from wind after she exited a helicopter. She’d obviously rather be known for her outerwear instead, though, so we should probably focus on the coat and (boring) shoes instead :)

      • kimmeister

Plus, Kate caught William’s eye when she was modeling lingerie for a charity event, back in the day.

      • MsALVA

The consensus is that the bum pic was photoshopped. Plus, she wouldn’t be bare, she always wears hose, and did that day.

        • marlie

          Aha. Good point.

        • DesertDweller79

Somehow, I’m relieved to hear that.

    • lamamu

      Cheeky! Ha!!!

    • Valerie Little

Gorgeous coat but it looks a little holiday-ish for late May.

    • BayTampaBay

I have not seen the “butt” picture. Does Kathy have a nice rear?

      • schadenfreudelicious

        Indeed she does :)

      • Monica De Leon

I saw the pic, was expecting Kathy to have the long pancake bottom, ala Paris or Gwynnie, but turns out she has a cute little bum

    • LadyVimes

….I don’t like it. I could see her gran-in-law wearing it, and Cathy has worn better coats. Give it to your gran, Cathy.

    • Glam Dixie

I want that stuffed Corgi! And the coat, I’ll take that too. What have I missed? When did the duchess flash panties? How scandalous!

      • Qitkat

Aww, Georgie will love that Corgi!

        • Glam Dixie

Corgis just naturally look like stuffed animals anyway, I have two (real ones) and they are so cute. Love the nursery rhyme!

    • PinkyK

She has mastered dressing consertatively yet oh so chic! Most women execs should follow her lead.

    • ballerinawithagun

Fabulous the coat, the subtle dye job is amazing!

    • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

It’s international LACK of underwear model, no? She has a very nice bum but she’s an idiot to go commando during a public appearance. Granny must be pissed.

      • Lori

That’s assuming that the photo is legit & not ‘shopped to hell and gone or someone else’s bum altogether, which is not exactly a sure thing.

        • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

I’m pretty sure it’s legit. I haven’t seen anything to suggest otherwise.

          • Lori

Among other things, the fact that apparently only one photographer got the shot and no one else seems to have seen it makes me wonder. It’s not like it was a private moment or that there was anywhere in camera range that had only one photographer. There were other people there too and If folks without cameras at the ready had seen her bum it seems rather unlikely that none of them would have Tweeted about it. Instead one guy sells pics to a really tacky German tabloid? I’m inclined to have some doubts unless she cops to it (which she isn’t going to). Also, given that she’s fairly conservative in her personal style, well acquainted with wind issues and the future queen of England it seems odd to me that she would go commando at an official appearance. I know some people are borderline pathological about VPL, but it still seems a little unlikely coming from a person who so clearly thinks out every detail of what she wears to official occasions.

In any case, selling/publishing the picture strikes me as really tacky and invasive and even if the photo is 100% real I don’t think she’s the one who ought to be getting shit for it.

            • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

This comment on Jezebel pretty much expresses my POV: At this point I just roll my eyes at yet another Kate ‘marilyn’ moment-and I say this as as a fan of hers. It is the 12th/13th time this has happened at a official work function since she got married (I’m not even thinking about all the bum/fanny shots that exist from the dating/engagement days) I personally think it reads as unprofessional. When her skirt flew up in Canada-fine it’s an accident and windy. Once it happens 12 times including 3 separate events on the Oz/NZ trip alone-it’s no longer about being an accident because of the weather.

That’s not letting the press off the hook for publishing the photos. They shouldn’t have and it’s gross. But if I were at work and my blouse kept falling open in meetings and I didn’t do anything to fix it, that would be considered unprofessional.

            • sugarkane105

Can I ask what she is supposed to do about it? Last time I checked, it wasn’t very windy in my office’s conference room.

            • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

Wear underwear and get a weighted hem (that’s what the Queen does).

            • Lori

Eh, when it’s windy skirts blow. Unless we’re going to say that she has to wear narrow skirts in order to be professional at the job of being Mrs Future King walking around outside then I can’t get worked up about it. She has a lot of restrictions on what she can wear as it is. If we’re going to add “doesn’t blow in the wind” then she’s down to pencil skirts and tweed and weighted skirts and then everyone will complain how boring and dowdy and mumsy she looks and that she’s dressing like her grandmother-in-law and blah, blah, blah.

IDK, I think this week I’m just seriously not in the mood for people creeping on women in public and criticizing them for showing too much or not living up to other people’s expectations of their behavior or whatever. I’m not inclined to side with anyone on that right now, and that includes Jezebel.

            • http://www.alisarivera.com/ Alisa Rivera

No, I get it. I’ve been #YesAllWomen posts on Twitter and Tumblr and it’s seriously upsetting, so I understand. It can be hard to parse the line of what’s okay to expect for professionalism and what’s unacceptable policing of women’s bodies. And I am willing to admit that my reaction to this may not be correct.

            • Lori

And I’m willing to admit that I may be at little too up on my soapbox about it and maybe Kate needs to look into heavier fabric. It is a hard line to walk.

            • siriuslover

Wasn’t she told to wear skirts with weighted hems? That would be a pain in the er… rear, I think.

            • Lori

I have no idea what she’s been told. People swore the Queen had forbidden her to wear her skirts above the knee any more, but we’ve seen the royal knees since then so people were apparently talking out their bums. It wouldn’t surprise me if going forward a rule change of some sort was implemented. I hope for Kate’s sake it isn’t weighted hems because I agree that would be a pain and would ruin the line of a lot of the things she likes to wear. Loramir & I (above) vote for her to get good slips. I guess we’ll see. Although hopefully not too much.

            • Loramir

I know they’re old fashioned nowadays, but it seems like slips would both help with VPL and wind-related incidents. Gives you an extra layer in case things blow around. I’ve got one that’s basically satin shorts, which would be even safer. I’m pretty un-stylish but I like to wear white skirts or thin silky ones without my undies showing through and I refuse to wear thongs. If I was a public figure constantly surrounded by cameras, I’d definitely be taking some kind of precautions.

            • Lori

A slip would be my choice as well. I am not wearing a thong and I agree that a light slip is probably the best non-thong solution. If you have the right one no one ever sees it, it just keeps your business, your business. Some old-fashioned things needs to stay in the past, others were discarded prematurely.

            • Kayceed

When I was a girl I used to wear pettipants under my school uniform skirts. Just like a slip but cut as shorts.

            • DagnyReardon

Even if she had granny panties on, it still would have been a money shot.

            • marlie

I tend to agree with you… it looks like she’s wearing hose, but in the bum shot, it seems like there are NO pantyhose. Plus (not that I pay THAT much attention to her rear end), it just doesn’t look the way hers is shaped in any other photo.

If I were in her position, I might make sure that I have a had (or two) free, just in case, but I wouldn’t necessarily change my dressing preferences because of the risk of a gust of wind. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are new “rules” about shutting off the helicopter propellers before she disembarks or something, rather than new rules on what she’s supposed to wear.

      • estella_nyc

All I can say is that I wish I had a bum like hers.

      • amf0001

        I thought she was wearing a thong…

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I wonder how much a picture of a royal bum goes for these days…

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      SO ANYWAY…Where’s the baby?

    • SewingSiren

Excuse me, but what is a Goat dress?

      • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.com/ Catherine

        It’s a clothing brand.

        • SewingSiren

Thank you. With all this bottom talk , that is not at all what I was thinking.

      • kimmeister

It took me a second to figure it out too. I momentarily wondered if they had made goat hair into a very scratchy wool.

    • http://www.bethposts.blogspot.com/ Buffy

I think the coats may be one of the best reasons to marry in.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Love, love the coat, and the color is so good on Cathy. Yes, the brooch reads a bit matronish, but like all Royal appearances, there is probably a reason for it being there.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheOctocornNetwork International Model

Don’t tell the Duchess of Cambridge to wear less jewelry – we must encourage her, so she can finally bring out the good stuff (to prove that Liz hasn’t pawned it all off for quick cash).

    • EEKstl

Coat is fab, wish she would get away from those putty shoes, and that platform is so 2012.

    • Judy_S

QE2 doesn’t need a stuffed corgi. She has real ones. Nice toy for the princeling and prospective princessling. Nice coat, too. I like the pin, but I’m a grandma .

    • Annmarie Kane

The coat is PORN. The Historically Significant Brooch divine. BELTED would have taken this out of grandma territory into WERK from the ankles up. Dear GOD will the LK Bennett nudes EVER die?!

      • Courtney

Bet not, given that the Queen’s been wearing the same black shoes for all appearances for decades now.

      • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

I can’t help but think they must be very comfortable so this is why she keeps wearing them. :)

    • Qitkat

I’m clutching my pearls (South Pacific natural silver-grey :-) that she goes commando during public appearances.
ICK. [My Jurassic-Aged opinion for anyone, not just her.]

So love the coat and the brooch, however.

      • Melissa Brogan

I think the general consensus was that she was wearing a thong, not going commando.

In any event, it’s none of anyone’s business and it’s unfortunate we have pictures at all!

        • siriuslover

Now I feel kind of bad for asking if anyone saw the pictures. I did not, for the record.

          • Melissa Brogan

Oh, I hope my comment didn’t come across too harshly; I just don’t like the upskirt paparazzi culture. Granted the wind was blowing so not quite the same, but it doesn’t seem fair that we know what her underwear is like at all :)

        • Qitkat

Relieved, and True, but we are BKs with opinions :)

        • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

She always wears hose, as far as I know. I’m pretty sure she was wearing it that day. :)

        • Tiffany Birch

Wait, what are you guys talking about? I’m sorry but I’m out of the loop. Can someone please explain about her underwear vs. going commando? When? Where? Thx!

          • Melissa Brogan

When she was touring Australia and New Zealand she was getting off a helicopter I think and it was windy. Her skirt flew up a bit and a photog caught a pic of her bum. I haven’t personally seen the photos but from what people have said she was wearing thong underwear. The British press won’t publish the photo, but a German tabloid did and then the Sydney Daily Telegraph followed suit.

            • Tiffany Birch

Thanks for explaining. I agree with you — it’s none of our business what underthings people wear and I give a high-five, just like Kate, to the British press for not publishing the photos.

    • MsALVA

The brooch was a wedding gift from William. They’re Celtic knots. I looove that coat, btw. I’m jealous that she can still wear them into almost-June, while I swelter in the humidity already.

    • Melissa Brogan

I love the coat. And her high-fiving.

    • siriuslover

Totally inappropriate question: did you guys see the infamous butt picture? I have not. I do really like that coat. I also love all the Scotland flags waving around.

    • ashtangajunkie

I have coat-envy like never before. But not shoe-envy.

    • frannyprof

Love the coat. But it deserves better shoes than the ones she’s wearing.

    • Lauren

Over/under on her stylist installing little weights into her hems like a shower curtain?

    • http://www.snoskred.org/ Snoskred

In the 3rd photo down, on her wrist you can see a Loom Band.

These things are all the craze here in Australia and people kept giving them to both Kate and William. It was awesome. :)

    • kittentoes

I want the coat and the stuffed corgi.

    • SierraDelta

SO tired of those shoes. Maybe we could petition Crown Princess Mary of Denmark to take Mrs. Cathy shoe shopping.

LOVE the coat! The pin has some sort of historic/cultural significance, and I read somewhere that it was a wedding gift to her.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

What a great coat. It certainly doesn’t need to be belted.

    • Frankie Carter

She’s looking a bit haggard. I hope George isn’t keeping her up too much.

    • ellatheingenue

I love that it says “paired with a Goat dress.” what a fascinating name for a clothing brand.

They gave her a Corgi so she could get the hint that she should continue that royal Corgi tradition and not switch it to Spaniels. Corgis rule!

      • snarkykitten

I think she & Will should start a new tradition: rescue pups!

      • Joanna

Well, the Queen has spaniels, too, including two named Spick and Span.

    • DesertDweller79

I love this color on her! And I am so glad she is wearing it without the belt.

    • majorbedhead

I kind of love that brooch. It’s very pretty. And the coat is to die for.

    • quiltrx

You can tell she’s not Gramma Betty….her purse does have a kiss-lock but does not have the adorable little arm strap.
That coat is terrific, and a great choice.

    • ms_kat

In the second pic, she has one of those horrible rainbow rubberband bracelets on (you know, the kind you make with a loom). I have fanwanked that she is wearing it because some child just gave it to her.

    • ms_kat

Also, I know it’s a typo, but I love that the tag says goat. I clicked on it hoping there would be actual goat pictures involved.

      • smh4748

It’s a clothing brand, not a typo. But I agree, actual goats would definitely spice up the meet-and-greet photos. :)

        • ms_kat

Hahahah! I have just revealed both that I am an idiot and that I don’t read captioning closely enough. Hilarious. I’d prefer a goat photo!

    • Fuchsiaforever

Hahahah you guys are hilarious! My theory is that Cathy borrowed her grandmother-in-law’s beige heels. :/

    • FridaStaire

Wouldn’t it be nice if she wore boots for a change? Those horrible pumps!

      • Amel

There has to have been Duchess School in there somewhere for poor Cathy. I bet sensible, completely blah shoes were lesson #1

    • jwatt85

It’s a Celtic knot. William gave it to her as a wedding gift.

    • JP

I have brooches that belonged to my grandmother; didn’t realize wearing them meant I had become her. Then again, I have about 15 years on Cathy.

    • Jecca2244

wait, i’m confused by the butt flashing thing

      • in a pickle

A pap snapped a picture of her skirt flying up after she got out of a helicopter. She appears not to be wearing underwear (probably wearing a thong). Embarrassing, but on the plus side, she has an amazing butt.

    • in a pickle

That was a rather spectacular way to lose an argument regarding appropriate skirt length with your (grand) mother-in-law!
