Princess Cathy, who recently had to walk back a statement from the palace about how she doesn’t want people to focus on her clothes, returned the focus to her clothes today when she presented the Queen Elizabeth II Award for British Design to Patrick McDowell at the British Fashion Council in London.
That comment was always ill-advised because the Princess of Wales’ influence on the sales of British fashion is enormous and always has been. The royals may want to keep the focus on their good deeds and charitable initiatives, but they also serve as cheerleaders for British brands and industries and there’s no point being coy about that. When she wears something, if it’s affordable, it sells out. Even if its not affordable, every time she wears a British brand, their sales see a spike. People tend to get huffy about this because they think it makes her sound like a The Price is Right refrigerator model, but promoting British industries and companies is a huge part of her job and because she’s young and pretty, she gets saddled with the fashion. In twenty years, when she’s approaching senior citizenhood, and sitting on the throne, that role will be passed on to Charlotte and other young royal women. It was ever thus. Anyway, this is a pretty great look overall. The color’s unusual for her, as is the pussy bow and the flared pants, all off which combine to give it a bit more of a sense of modernity than some of her more royal styles.
