Cate Blanchett Style Quadruple Shot: Cannes Edition

Posted on May 19, 2014

Oh, Miss Lady has been BUSY. It’s kind of refreshing to see someone who just won a Best Actress Oscar poledance like crazy for her dragon cartoon. No resting on her laurels for this one. Besides, she apparently never misses an opportunity to get dressed up and stun us.

Not our favorite look. Too boobular and too close to her skin tone. Even with those complaints, it still looks pretty gorgeous on her.

J’ADORE. A dragon hide dress. Of course.

J’ADORE, Part Deux. Serving up some Blade Runner realness. That does not look like an easy dress to wear, either.  We doubt she did much sitting. Suffering for her beauty. Another reason to love her.

Those earrings look like bejeweled shrimp. We can’t decide whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

This is gorgeous, but we had to kind of remind ourselves of that because, like the gold Armani Prive at the top, it’s somewhat standard in a lot of ways and we’re always more focussed on her edgier looks. That’s not quite fair, because she looks more stunning here than 95% of red carpet denizens normally do.

This is too much perfect for one post.

This website will collapse in on itself, creating a black hole that will begin sucking in reality, space, and time until the only thing left is the Council of Fierce who created the Universe and have been walking Gods among us for years now.

      • Glam Dixie

        “You make me cry seestra.”

        • RussellH88

I live alone, which means I have no one to talk to and it’s not uncommon for me to talk out loud like Helena.

          • Glam Dixie

My daughters all walk around the house talking like Meatwad or Smeagol. Helena is not a bad choice.

          • KinoEye

I like to pretend I’m the emcee from Cabaret. “So, life is disappointing? Forget it! In here, life is beautiful. The girls are beautiful. Even the orchestra is beautiful!” My animals are not impressed with my renditions of Wilkommen.

      • holla

Is Cate one of the ones on the Council of Fierce, along with Tilda?

        • RussellH88

Of course she is. So is Grace Jones and Iman.

          • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

And Grace Jones is 66 years old today!

            • bitchybitchybitchy

Proof that Fierce knows no age.

          • ConnieBV

            Don’t forget Fan Bingbing.

        • E. Sevilla

and fan bingbing, helen mirren von fanfuckingtastica, dita von teese, lupita nyong’o and lucy liu.

        • melisaurus

          David bowie??

          • holla

David Bowie and Iman are the superman and wonder woman of the council.

      • Joey Melliza

        AMEN!

    • gabbilevy

      Oh, they’re undoubtably shrimp.

I love everything about this post, this whole pole dance, this movie, the fact that BLANCHETT has joined one of my absolute FAVE franchises, that rosette necklace, the bodice of that Givenchy (although the back is a little sad-making)… everything.

      • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

        Definitely shrimp.

        • Lucía Gavello

          And I’ve decided it’s a good thing.

          • Kathy_Marlow

            I love it, it’s quirky.

          • Monabel

The world needs bejeweled shrimp, I know I do.
And the necklace over the blue dress looks like baby two-headed snakes to me. In a good way.

            • AshleyDeHaye

Why is this not a thing? I love it!

        • FridaStaire

          King prawn!

        • GorgeousThings

Yep – they’re prawn earrings, in a nod to Australia.
And I love her for it

      • Jacob Bowen

Yep, I felt my hives starting to appear as soon as I saw them…shudder.

    • imperfectlaura

Wow…she needs to poledance at Cannes every year.

    • Chuck Barthelme

She has some kind of power over me. I feel tingley. I think it’s something in her smile, but she looks amazing in the clothes too.

    • imspinningaround

Those are definitely shrimp earrings. This is why Cate Blanchett is fun; she’s totally open to wearing something silly with her couture because she understands that none of this is serious.*

*I may be projecting a bit.

      • Golfkat

Fun and silly, but nevertheless Chopard shrimp, which means crème de la crème diamonds and jewels. I can’t even imagine how much they must cost. You gotta love luxury fashion and it’s willingness to be utterly ridiculous. Love it!

    • http://www.bertkeeter.com Bert Keeter

Everything is a WERQ except the back of that Givenchy…. clumsy and just plain unsophisticated!

      • ballerinawithagun

I can’t believe the boys didn’t comment on the back!

        • holla

I think it make the bodice look like armor, which is great. I love it.

        • Sarah

The front is making up for the back so hard it cancels it out.

          • Glam Dixie

I agree, when you get slapped in the face that hard by the front the back gets a pass.

            • Sarah

Simply scroll back up and forget about it ;)

    • http://foodycat.blogspot.co.uk/ Alicia

I do think that if Chopard invites you to their party and gives you (kinda ugly…) bejewelled roses to drape around your neck, you should at least wear something a bit low cut that doesn’t compete. The naked Armani dress might have been a better option.

      • Bridget Smith

Oh, I actually thought that was an unusual and perfectly complementary choice of dress and necklace. That necklace would’ve overwhelmed anything that made less of a statement, but as it is, the colors of dress & roses pop against each other and make it look like a deliberate choice rather than “they gave me this jewelry at the door.”

        • ballerinawithagun

I love the way the two work together. At first I thought the necklace was part of the dress and I was trying to figure out how you would put on the dress with that attached.

          • kimmeister

I absolutely thought it was part of the dress. *hangs head in shame*

    • Mrs. Julien

      [bowing down]

    • kimmeister

My favorite is #3, it is perfect. She is pulling off those tricky sleeves like nobody’s business.

#2 is ok, but I feel like it obliterates her shape. Also, it reminds me of Mardi Gras or something.

I have concluded I don’t like to see her in shades of tan/taupe. I like Cate in bolder colors.

    • @Biting Panda

The blue/green Armani Prive may be one of the most beautiful moments of Cate being Cate, that I have ever seen. It is perfection.
The other three, have their beauty mixed with flaws, but the that one is breathtaking.

      • marlie

I agree completely. I keep going back to look at her in that dress… she’s just luminous.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That color is perfect on her. I have such a girl crush on Cate.

    • Super_Red

The first two are not fabulous. ick. And then… Three. WOW. Just… WOW. Four is also gorgeous, but I think the third dress may just be one of my all time favorite Cate looks ever. Gorgeous.

      • Carleenml

yes to the yes. it hurts. so fucking fabulous.

    • hannabanana

Love everything about this woman. That third look is so reminiscent of Naomi Watts’ Oscar dress from a year back, though, and that dress owns all Prive dresses.

    • demidaemon

I LOVE #2 + 3, kind of like number 4, and am totally distracted and disliking the boob fungus on 1.

    • Janet B

      Gorgeous.
She appears to love being a (real) movie star.

    • Danielle

I am dead of fierce. Send help.

    • LadyVimes

      KHALEESI

    • VicD

Fuggitaboudit … straight A’s across the board. Dragon scales – love them (on her)! Shrimp earrings – love them (on her)! Just bow down and stay down mere mortals.

    • uprightcitizen

Not particularly crazy about the Givenchy (it looks heavy and thick and the fact that the entire back is illusion netting is kind of unfortunate), but man, those last two gowns … wow. Everything about that Armani Privé look, from the color, to the necklace, to her hair … all stunning. And the feathered yoke and collar on the last one takes it from standard to amazing (on her). It seems like there must be events where other women just turn around and go home the moment they see her.

    • Froggae

Those last 2 dresses are making me grit my teeth with envy, especially the feather detail on the last one. I can’t take her awesomeness. Although the 3rd one is a skosh too tight. There, she’s not perfect.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

All stunning. Just disappointed that the dragon hide dress looks so unfinished from the back.

    • SouthernGirlRena

I know I must be part of a tiny minority but I really dislike all of this except the Armani dress and the shrimp earrings. Not even the fabulousness that is Kate Blanchett can make me love see through lacy dresses, especially dust colored ones.

    • 25or6to4

I’ll take a dozen of that third dress (complete with the Chopard bling), please and thank you.

    • KT

I fuckin love all of this, especially the blue Armani Prive with that awesome little flower necklace — that was an inspired choice that worked really well. Cate is the shit, as is her stylist.

    • Glam Dixie

Shutting. It. Down. How can a pale, blonde woman make a beige dress sing like that? Magic. ETA, LOVE the flower necklace and the blue Armani the most.

    • http://redheadedwolf.wordpress.com/ Laura Renee

      BEJEWELED SHRIMP. Cannot see.

Now imagine the first dress in a jewel tone. *mourns the missed opportunity* Though it is more boobular, as they said, than her usual style.

Love the feather collar and shoulders for the last one.

    • Karen Belgrad

…and THAT is how one does illusion netting. Thankyouverymuch. (throws down mic, leaves the building)

    • Fuchsiaforever

Deployment of shrimp earrings here is a good thing- J’ADORE! Surreal- in the same vein of Dali’s crazy jewelry designs! :D

    • KinoEye

God, that POISE. In pretty much every single photo, she is giving us editorial face fierceness. She’s always on. Astounding.

    • Call me Bee

I always love a neutral dress on a stunning fair-haired woman. The first look is perfect. (Who knew she had boobs?) The second is lovely, but I wish the back weren’t so odd looing, like the scale pattern used to go ’round the back but was chopped off. The third is beautiful, as is the last. When Miss Cate takes the RC, we are not worthy…..

      • Fuchsiaforever

        Yeah, who knew!

    • TM

She’s stunning, but that Grace of Monaco post scared me. No fears though, her cartoon dragon movie is getting super great reviews. (Reassuring since, you know…Dreamworks…franchises…success rate…eh.)

    • BlairBear

I look at the first and fourth look and kind of get why designers keep doing the washed out sheer lace thing. we should force them to sign an agreement that they will only put these looks on La Blanchett

    • kmk05

OH MY GOD. THE FABULOUSNESS, IT HURTS.

If I may say, Uncles, the fact that the first dress is boobtastic is what makes it amazing, because we see her in this sort of stuff so little. We know she is a spectacular woman, but this also reminds us that she has a spectacular rack and can do sexy and yet ethereal.

The 2nd and 3rd look are so fucking on point, there’s nothing to even say.

      • NeenaJ

Came here to say the same thing!

    • halleygee

The Givenchy makes me think of a Light Bright.

      • Alanna

Thank you! I was just about to say the same thing. Glad I scrolled down instead.

    • Dagney

I love that she can have fun with fashion and still look elegant.

    • Jessica Freeman

I die over the second one. Goddess.

    • Fuchsiaforever

Shrimp earrings are very Mediterranean! Perfect for Cannes! Brilliant Cate!

    • Violina23

I love how she’s literally looking DOWN At the camera in the first shot, as if we are in permanent “bowing down” status.

My favorite is #3. That is just stunning and the fit is impeccable.

    • chipwitch

I actually love the first one. She is one of a VERY SMALL number of people who really look like they might have emerged from crystals, making it perfectly sensical for her to appear that way at public events. I even wish the bottom of the dress was either closer to her skin tone or more of an ombre (darker to the bottom).

    • majorbedhead

      *happy sigh* So much pretty!

    • Audrey Lee

This is….Like flail worthy. That second dress is giving me LIFE. How she continues to exist on a realm that is THAT awesome I don’t know, but holy smokes.

    • Pennymac

I think those ARE be-jeweled shrimp.
Jaw droppingly awesome. She is divine!

      • snarkykitten

The Swedish chef got into jewelry design.

    • tallgirl1204

That third dress is in my top five Cate looks ever. What a gorgeous color.

    • ashtangajunkie

I can hardly get past the gorgeousness of her face to look at the gowns. It’s just a long line of wow.

    • Julie

Quibbles aside, the last dress is still a winner for me, because FEATHERS!!

    • carnush

What I’m really in awe of is her makeup artist. Her face is done up perfectly to complement every look. It’s never overdone and always gorgeous.

      • P M

I want the voodoo in her face cream.

    • Jennifer Bober

Thank you T and Lo for my Monday inferiority complex! ;-)

She looks amazing and I love how she’s playing with looks that evoke dragons and other fantastical creatures (including bejeweled shrimp!). She manages to look amazing with witty references to her film (which I, for one, plan to see). Inferiority complexes aside, it’s really nice to see someone who gets it at this level.

    • snarkykitten

Everything is stunning…except for that last dress. Sorry, Galadriel, but not even you can rock bejeweled shrimp & old bras.

    • msdamselfly

Very gorgeous. Love the accessorizing. The jewelry is beautifully matched and whimsical.

    • Noah

Holy mother of god, the rarely (if ever) achieved quadruple WERQ!

    • Claudia Berry

Aside from the first dress, which makes her look like she has two sets of boobs, and the weird back on the other one, she’s just gorgeous. Like most teenage girls, omg I just can’t even.

    • Lilithcat

      # 4 was a bit of a clunker, but probably only in comparison to the others. Love the dragon skin!

    • P M

The first pic: The boob part is enh, but you guys! Look at the picture as a whole! That first pic is almost editorial.

But of course the dragon dress is just….. beyond. I have no words. I’m in awe.

    • Crystal

I’m pretty sure those ARE shrimp earrings.

      Only Cate.

    • P M

Oh, by the way, did anyone notice behind the dragon dress of awesomeness, that there is a dragon with a bowtie on behind her?!

    • Wink

She nails three out of four! (Not a fan of sheer skirts like on #4.)

    • Carla_Charlton

ALL SHALL LOVE ME AND DESPAIR. That applies particularly to the first look.

    • ktr33

I might be a lone voice here, but only love 1, and like 1. Gold lace and chiffon – grandma’s fancy table cloth. The next dress is interesting and cool, but I don’t like that little neck ruffle and the sheer stuff in back holding up the big – that’s never good. Blue dress is the standout. So clean and modern but also somehow edgy and fanciful. Plus, great & unusual color. LOVE. Last one, shredded lace, Miss Havisham-y.

    • altalinda

You are far too kind to the Givenchy, which fails for the half-assed illusion netting on the back.

    • rhône

If those earrings are actually bejeweled shrimp (which I doubt), I’m LIVING; that’s so seapunk. The third dress is my favorite, I love the color.

    • amaranth16

I think those first pictures are stunning. The color of the dress against that fading dusk sky – oh my goodness.

    • AlisonHendryx

remember last week, when we were all a bit disappointed in Eva Green for her terrible heroin make-up? She needs to look at these pictures of Cate’s hooded eyes and literally. copy. everything. Cate is glowing, and smiling, and we still see her eyes, and she doens’t look like a vampire. It’s perfect hooded eye make up. (Also that dress with the rose necklace matches her eyes. Matches. Her. Eyes.)

    • GKaller

The shrimp earrings. That had to be an intentional design. Come on, if it wasn’t, no one said, oh you know these aren’t going to work because they look like sea creatures!!!

    • Judy_S

She is fabulous, and almost reconciles me to that glittery-lace-symmetrical-rash syndrome dress in the first shot. In the final one, not so much, mostly because it seems like a waste of nice feathers to stick them onto a glittery lace rash of a dress.

    • MilaXX

Dislike the first one for ll the reason mentioned. LOVE 2 & 3. Especially the cheekiness of the second look. I think the fourth is okay, but probably looks better in person. I liked the earrings with the forth dress until you described them as bedazzled shrimp and now I can’t unsee.

    • MartyBellerMask

      Cate is UNREAL.

    • NMMagpie

Looking better than most humans do. Can’t complain.

    • mjude

bowing the fuck down once again. omg, bejeweled shrimp earrings!

    • numenah

So in love, especially with that third Armani. Her makeup is perfection, but it would be hard to eff up that beautiful skin.

    • Synnae

The Bladerunner dress is my favourite. By a mile and then some. Stunning and edgy. Perfection. WERQ. Ok, I’ll shut up now.

    • boweryboy

Those earrings are bejeweled shrimp (not in the literal sense, I hope). Google “Chopard shrimp earrings”. I so want a pair and I don’t wear earrings.

      • SewingSiren

With Pink diamonds and multi colored sapphires, thank you for that.

    • SewingSiren

All lovely. My favorite being the aquamarine. Second runner up the shirmp!

    • marlie

I like the first dress, but I don’t love it. The second is totally perfect for the setting. The third is simply gorgeous. The fourth is my least favorite.

    • María José Benites Peralta

The gowns! The jewels! That woman! Everything is perfect and little more.

    • lalahartma

First and third! I think the cleavage in #1 is perfect. And the ‘nudeness.’

    • Akemi

      God, she is perfect.

    • DesertDweller79

I LOVE looks #2 and #3. Amazing! LOL’d at the Dragon Hide #2 look. Too perfect! Look #3 is freaking amazing. Indeed, I could never wear that. Thank you, Cate!

Hate the color on the first one. It being so close to her skin tone makes it look like her skin is mottled or flaky or something. Blech. Not really feeling the last look.

    • Tee

I think the fourth one probably looks amazing up close. The details are extraordinary. Two and three are stunning. One is still very, very good. Better than most red carpet bitches on their best days.

    • BLauD

I like to imagine she’s wearing some skates under that Chopard party look. How could she possibly walk/move without a minion’s assistance?

    • Megsy

I get the feeling she is poledancing for Chopard not for the movie.

    • Shawn EH

Her league is of her own.

    • StillGary

3/4 aint bad! I gotta disagree on the last look. The dress (is it a dress?) is cut off weird at her waste and I can’t believe that I’m typing this but the lace below gives the illusion that Ms. Cate cannot quite conceal a very huge bush. PLease forgive me.

      • altissima

        Eewwww! Once seen…

      • FibonacciSequins

You’ve just changed my mind about that one!

      • livesarah

OMG. Totally missed that, but now can’t unsee!

    • Molly

I love the first look the best, boobity nude and all. She looks like a goddess.

    • altissima

Really TLo, effusively feathered collar and sleeves and chopard snail and shrimp jewellry are a “somewhat standard” look??

    • livesarah

The first look is hideous. The second and third are breathtaking (the third perhaps literally). The fourth look is not my cup of tea, but she looks so at ease in that dress and I am such a sucker for trinket-y sparkly novelty earrings (ones that cost more than my car, in this case) that I have to give it to her. She looks like she could quite happily sit on the lounge and watch TV in a dress like that, which is pretty awe-inspiring.

    • Qitkat

Truth? I don’t really love any of these. But she looks incredible in the blue Armani Privé. And I would love a pillow cover of the dragonhide Givenchy bodice.

    • e jerry powell

I will forever think of that Givenchy as the Cate Blanchett Superhero Gown because of the America Ferrera incident. ALWAYS.

      Cate Blanchett, red carpet superhero!

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

Omg they ARE bejeweled shrimps! I want them!

    • Alloy Jane

I wish the scaled dress had done a better job of resolving into the skirt (awkward belt moment), and that the back didn’t end so abruptly into that illusion netting. It makes the top look like a cuff, and that’s not so attractive.

Other than that, this exemplifies why she was the perfect Galadriel. It’s more than her beauty though. There is an intelligence, grace, and playfulness about her that is palpable. I’ve only ever seen her in one interview, and that was the recent post-oscars Ellen one, and she was exactly like I thought she’d be.

    • AnaRoW

The only dress I come close to liking is the dragon hide dress and it’s too tight. I think Cate’s an amazing actress but I’m almost as stumped by the amount of love she gets for wearing ridiculous clothes as I am for the Tilda’s love. Almost.

      • jif

You’re not alone. I love the Blade Runner Armani on her, but find the other three mediocre at best, and the praise for them baffling.

    • LeelaST

The only thing I don’t care for is the bare back of #2 – too “nothing” compared to the front. Other than that – in order – gorgeous, rainbow paillettes, that necklace, feathers. To die. All of them.

    • Melissa Mendes

The Armani dress gives me chills. So mind blowingly perfect. She is not of this earth.

    • rebeemoon

“Boobular.” Uncles need to copyright this term.

    • teensmom99

While they are all fantastic, if I had the Armani Prive with the crystals and looked like her in it, I would never wear anything else again. They would have to take it off my cold, dead body.

    • katiessh

The back of that dragon hide dress is so odd. I love her, but why, why does the last dress have to be sheer? what is wrong with lining?!

    • http://armchairauthor.wordpress.com/ LesYeuxHiboux

The Chopard Party look. I die. Don’t worry about Cate, though. Judging by that first look, her heart will go on.

    • quiltrx

They’re all fabulous, but the two Armani’s are my favorites. Kudos for the fun ‘dragon hide’ dress (the back is weirdness but I’m cool with that) and the hilarious shrimp earrings!
And if she’s done with that rose necklace, it can come to my house to live. It probably wouldn’t fit around my (fat) neck, but I could put it on a stand and worship it daily.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

A dragon hide dress-perfect for her poledance, but my personal favorite is that third look-love, love, love that dress. It speaks to the power of Cate that even though the first looks is too boobular that she is still stunning. As for those earrings, honey, if I had bejeweled shrimp earrings I would be looking for an occasion to justify wearing them.

    • V No Privacy

The earrings are supposed to look like shrimp! It’s kind of Shiaparelli-esque. The rose necklace is giving me life

Concur with both counts of J’ADORE.

If I were a ladystar, and I heard Cate was in the house, I’d just go home (or hide somewhere and admire from afar). There’s no topping her looks.

She is slaying in all of them. Either her taste or her stylist’s taste is exquisite and has been for years. I live for her red carpets.

I love that blue Armani. The dragon hide is also great.

      Oh, my. The perfection.

Love the blue Armani and the Valentino feather gowns. That feather collar is genius. She’s killing in these.

This woman can do no wrong! Seriously, though – Cate Blanchett makes illusion netting work and not look like tacky hosiery. Bowing the fuck DOWN!

      Always lovely!

I love her in all but the last. Fancy shrimp earrings are kinda adorable though.
