It pleases us to report that Emma Thompson has come out the other side of her “To Hell With This Industry And Its Retrograde Pressures” phase that hits every intelligent actress around the time she turns fifty, which tends to result in a lot of defiantly ugly shoe choices and comfort-over-style outfit choices. Reductive? Sure! But it’s a (perfectly understandable, we should add) pattern that plays out a lot in the style evolution of long-time female stars. Our point here is that Miss Emma came to the Locarno Film Festival to premiere her upcoming release Dead of Winter and also to pick up a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award and managed to look fabulous while not shoving herself into a lot of uncomfortable things that she clearly doesn’t want to wear.

That looks spectacular on her. She’s clearly comfortable, but everything is extremely well-chosen to deliver a high-impact picture and vibe. The print pops and the sandals are fabulous. Hair and makeup are flawless. This is a perfect example of how to do red carpet-level style without succumbing to trends or discomfort.

Another great set of choices that suits her perfectly, delivers glam on a red carpet level, and doesn’t ask too much of her. Love the earrings and the mules. It was smart to separate the top out from the coordinating skirt in the look book, but it would seem that the textile needs to be tucked into a contrasting pair of pants.
