We’re just gonna say it: We’re disappointed. The original costume designs by Angela Wendt for the Broadway production of Rent are fairly iconic at this point. They’re also, because of time, exposure, countless traveling productions and a somewhat mediocre movie, way past stale. We’re sorry to see that Wendt, who also did the costumes for this production, didn’t really do anything fresh or new. We realize the point of these star-studded Live productions are less about interpreting the works and more about faithfully recreating the experience of watching them on stage, but they’re also an opportunity to put these works in front of young audiences who aren’t familiar with them, which makes it a prime opportunity to freshen up the aesthetic or approach a little.

Oh, well. No one looks bad, but several of them look like they’re cosplaying, especially Brandon and Valentina.

They sound great, though.
