Princess Cathy wore her best look in ages for a family event and we’re starting to think her professional, public-facing style has fallen into a rut. The Princess of Wales attended the wedding of Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips to Harriet Sperling in a salute to wheat.

You might think we’d be all over this one, complaining about the matchiness and the lack of color, if not the twee-ness of the design, but we never like to be predictable sorts so we’re going to praise her for this one. Sometimes with neutrals, you want to fully commit to them, so any sort of pop of color added to this outfit – shoes, hat band, bag – would not have improved it, in our opinion. There’s a richness to the dress, largely because of the weight and textural quality of the textile. If we’re being nitpicky, we can’t say we love the fringed collar, fabric-covered buttons or matching belt. We could see the argument that brass buttons and a black belt would have been sharper choices. We tend to dislike the fascinators she favors, so we’re on board with this hat choice, although we think the crown looks too small for her. We also think sporting the royal curls under a hat like that has fairly strong juvenile undertones to it. Still, there’s a real sense of style to this look, which tends to set it apart from the more workmanlike ensembles she deploys for engagements.
