The Drama star Zendaya has been making the talk show rounds in a succession of eye-popping looks, as expected. We’re just going to give up on where any of them fall on the “old/new/borrowed/blue” scale and just get down to the only question about celebrity fashion that has ever mattered to us: does it look good and get the job done? Let’s assess.

This is cutely weird or weirdly cute, depending on how you want to look at it. We can see the argument that the overlay is overworked, but we think all of the visual noise of those sheer pleats is the entire point of the design. If we could magically edit, we’d make the hem even, but that’s the only note we have. We’d probably remove the arm label as well, but that sort of thing doesn’t bug us in promotional dressing. We really love how unusual and striking this is.

This is also unusual and striking, but not necessarily in a good way. We just don’t see how those two prints coordinate and we don’t see how throwing a black sweater over a flimsy sun dress makes any sense. We like that she’s getting a little weird with her style and not just going for the basic pretty pieces, but this one’s not working for us.

God, she really does have a talent, because she looks gorgeous, but that dress is a HIDEOSITY. It’s obviously meant to check off a few of those bridal tropes and we can admit that the blue lace is actually kind of pretty, but it’s all so hideously overdesigned; a clumsy attempt to marry sweetly romantic design tropes with sexy and fetishized ones and it just doesn’t combine all that well. The bodice is a mess. We’re not really here for him, but we have no objections to his look, except we hate black dress shoes with jeans.
