Season 2 of Beef is receiving critical buzz and we’re pretty sure that stars Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac will be up for Emmys before the year is out. But we’re not convinced of that because of the aforementioned buzz.

It’s because these two have stepped up their red carpet game considerably for this promo. Just reading the red carpet tea leaves over here.

To be fair, neither of them were ever bad dressers, just somewhat boring ones. Lots of plain tuxes and little black dresses on their red carpet resumes. But both of these looks have something their style choices tend to lack: personality. This is a cute, dressy-casual take on a leisure suit and it works for him. We wouldn’t have recommended black dress shoes, though. And a lighter shirt would’ve been nice.

Do we like the ruffle? No. Do we like the combination of velvet and satin? Also no. In truth, we don’t actually like this look all that much, but it’s memorable and photogenic and it doesn’t cause her to recede, like so many of her style choices. That’s a tricky color to pull off, and we wouldn’t recommend wearing it exclusively, but she really comes alive when she’s got something bright on.
