The Testament of Ann Lee star Amanda Seyfried has been wearing a lot of black dresses while promoting the movie, which is a musical about the founder of the Shakers, but it wasn’t until we caught look for the Palm Springs Film Festival “Talking Pictures” event that it clicked for us:

She’s doing a kind of Puritan Chic thing. That’s perhaps a little odd as theme-dressing goes, because the Shakers and the Puritans are two entirely different groups, but we suppose there’s a certain sense in dressing in a restrained, relatively modest style while promoting this film. The problem is that there’s simply no way to make this dress look anything but dowdy; not with those cuffs and that collar. It’s also oddly shapeless on her, although we think the whole look could be rescued with a kickass pair of shoes, possibly even boots, although that might belie the restrained modesty vibe she’s going for.
