Emily Blunt Loves Being Stretched Thin by Her Characters
The charismatic star works her magic again in The Smashing Machine.
Emily on inhabiting her character Dawn in The Smashing Machine: “It was very new and transforming for me, and it all started with the nails and then the spray tan. I’m so pale, I’m like blue. I’ve never had a spray tan that dark. Normally I’d put a spray tan on and they’re like, ‘Leave it on for an hour and a half, just a light glow.’ This time they were like, ‘Leave it on for four to five hours.’ The nails were amazing, too. I couldn’t even do my jeans up.”
Emily on acting with her friend, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: “I knew that I was going to bear witness to my friend completely transforming, and I wanted to be there and see that. It was one of the more moving experiences I’ve had on a film set, watching him discover what he’s capable of, watching the relief of being able to disappear. It was just immense.”
Emily on working with her husband in A Quiet Place: “I don’t think he knew what he was capable of. So it’s sort of like watching someone discover a superpower, which was wild. Before we started, I was like, ‘Look, I’m thrilled to be doing this with you, but do you know how to shoot this movie? Because I don’t know how to shoot a movie. So I’m just asking.’ He was laughing and he was like, ‘I think I do know how to shoot it. I don’t know why, but I think I do.’ Then, my God, did he. And can you imagine if he thought I was really s**t? That would not be good. I think if we had done that movie and we didn’t respect or admire each other, it would’ve been an absolute disaster.”
Emily on learning she had been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress: “It felt amazing. It’s a big moment. We’d dropped the kids off at school and were walking home, and John had the [Oscar nominations livestream] up on his phone, so I heard it in real time when they read it out. It was on a street corner in Brooklyn, and I did cry.”
