The cast of The Roses came out in somewhat surprisingly high style for the New York premiere.

We realize that none of these people have terrible red carpet histories, so our surprise is a little unfair, but usually at the tail end of summer, most stars save their decent looks for the upcoming film festivals and tend to slack off for any other promo work. Then again, this one’s been getting mixed reviews, so maybe everyone felt that game needed to be stepped up.
Kate McKinnon

Sharp, simple, classic, and perfectly suited to her.
Olivia Colman in Huishan Zhang

We wouldn’t normally gush over an all-black red carpet ensemble, but this truly looks fantastic on her and might be one of our faves from her in a good while. This could wind up looking very stern and dowdy on a different wearer (not least because of the Mary Janes), but it all suits her incredibly well. We’re not usually fans of big sequined flowers, but this one makes the look.
Benedict Cumberbatch

There are few things we loathe more than any attempt to make a standard suit jacket look more casual. We’ve never been fans of the Miami Vice pushed-up sleeves style, but we’ll take that over whatever the hell this is. Those cuffs look stupid, mostly because jacket linings are not meant to be seen. Also, a black double-breasted suit is the worst choice for pairing with a t-shirt and going sockless. Literally every styling decision here was wrong for the type of suit he’s wearing. If you want to go dressy casual, just get yourself a decent summer suit and go to town.
Andy Samberg

He looks really cute and we appreciate the effort and the resulting stylishness. We might have liked a little more contrast in the tie/shirt situation, but we’re just happy there’s any contrast at all. The suit has some fit issues, however. The jacket’s a bit small on him.
Allison Janney in Rhea Costa

No one tells Allison Janney to show up in black. This is a gorgeous gown and quite the little flex on her part because she dominates the entire red carpet. She looks amazing and the only nitpicky thing we have to offer is that the jewelry, while gorgeous, is perhaps a little focus-pulling. We’d have rec’d removing the cuff.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film The War of the Roses, based on the novel by Warren Adler.
