Cynthia Erivo hosted the Tony Awards last night in a quiet, demure manner, sending a message to the world that it’s about the ART not about what the artist is wearing. Haha, just kidding. She wore ten insane outfits because of course she did.
IN SCHIAPARELLI COUTURE
Very regal and “grande dame of the theater” in style and tone. We just hate the color.
IN GAPSTUDIO
This is a pretty fabulous interpretation of an iconic costume in Broadway history. The collar detail doesn’t work as well as it should, though.
IN MARNI
Meh. Like everything she wore this night, it’s certainly not boring or generic. We like the sequined floral pattern, but all that black… stuff on the skirt just ruins the outfit.
IN ASHI STUDIO
She can work a range of styles from classically chic to old-school romantic to edgy space queen, but we think our favorite highly specific style iteration is when she dresses like the leader of a worldwide cabal of fashion vampires. Our only quibble is that this would have been much more dramatic (not that it lacks drama) if it went to the floor.
[Designer TBD]
And occasionally, she likes to get her drag on.
IN MARC JACOBS
Or even get a little silly with it.
IN ASHI STUDIO
Just stunning. We love that coat, not just for the outer space embellishments, but because it’s a somewhat fresher shape than the wildly overused opera coat.
IN DOLCE & GABBANA
Interestingly enough, as a queer woman with an intense personal style, she doesn’t actually wear pants all that much. We wouldn’t suggest that she avoids them – and to be fair, the work she’s done in the last year (including this gig) pretty much demanded a succession of gowns – but despite the shaved head, all of the hardware, and the talons she prefers, she tends to be pretty femme in her preferences. This looks great. Love the strong shoulders and sequined vest.
IN RICHARD QUINN
Very 1956 debutante, which isn’t really a style that plays to her strengths. It’s pretty, but the waist detail is overdesigned.
IN VALENTINO
Kudos to the assistant who so carefully arranged her gown for this picture, but we hate how long that hem is. It’s a spectacular design otherwise, although we don’t love capelets.
