For the longest time, we’ve defaulted to “just throw a moto over it” any time a ladystar tries to get cutesy about covering up. It’s a classic piece and the juxtaposition of casual and formal has always worked, as far as we’re concerned. It’s still working here, as Zoe Saldana deploys it at the Cannes premiere of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, although this is one of those instances where it tends to come off like a lazy choice.

Yes, you can throw a moto over a gown and have it come off hot and fun and interesting. But it doesn’t work if you’re wearing the dullest, most casual gown you could get your hands on and refusing to do any other styling to elevate the look. You just won the Oscar and you’re at Cannes? Why is everything so plain? At the very least, a big honking diamond necklace was called for here. The only part we like are the shoes.
