Boomers assemble! Your outrage is called for, if not required at this moment. Taking a cue from director James Mangold’s casting of Timothée Chalamet as the legendary Bob Dylan for A Complete Unknown, director Sam Mendes came to CinemaCon to introduce the four young pinups playing the icons who made up The Beatles for his upcoming tetralogy of biopics. Yes, we had to look up “tetralogy.” Aren’t you enriched by its proper usage here? It means there will be four movies; one from each Beatle’s point of view. Seems like overkill to us, but we’re just the bitchy bloggers with the fancy vocabularies. Shall we assess their looks?

Meh. Maybe not. They clearly coordinated to keep themselves neutral, like an Apple product presentation. But you just can’t keep an Irish boy down and Barry had to saunter out in that fairly sweet McQueen jacket, which feels a little Sgt. Pepper-adjacent.

Are you angry yet? Honestly, we don’t have a dog in this hunt and we’ve always said that resemblances aren’t as important in biopics as performances. It’s a very talented – and not coincidentally, very cute cast. Except for Barry, we’re not seeing it for any of them and we fear Mendes might make the mistake you see in so many Marilyn biopics: the wrong-headed idea that you can just put any actor in the right wig and it’ll work. Also, four movies feels like wild overkill to us.
