If you listened to last Friday’s podcast, you know we had a fine time watching Black Doves and recommended it to anyone who wanted a fun spy caper – complete with a ton of Christmas decorations and London sightseeing – to watch over the holiday. The other benefit of Black Doves is that it means star Keira Knightley is out on the promo trail, working the kind of looks that only she would ever consider.

She keeps a pretty low profile when she’s not working or promoting, so every time she’s back on the publicity trail we have that moment of “Oh, right. Forgot how idiosyncratic her style can be.” We don’t think there’s another star who would consider working this combination of pieces at the same time. We’re genuinely surprised to see her in pirate boots given her comments about her time in franchise hell. The whole ensemble is ripped straight from the look book (see below). We’ve always felt she wasn’t so much a fashion girl as a true British eccentric who’s drawn to the goofier, off-the-beaten-path styles. We think the idea of black velvet gauchos sounds so terrible that no one should ever consider wearing them. On the other hand, this all feels very her.
In Valentino on THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON
Again: very her. It’s like she’s standing in for Princess Amidala all over again. We can’t imagine any other star choosing this dress let alone making it work. That yoke is honestly kind of ugly, but we can’t take our eyes off her and that’s pretty much the point.
