As per the usual, we gave some folks a spotlight post, but it’s time to put our coverage of the 2024 British Independent Film Awards red carpet to bed, good and judged. Line up, indie Brits!
Indira Varma in Bora Aksu
The under dress is cute. The over dress ruins it. The witchy boots are fun but we don’t think they go with the dress(es).
James Norton
First things first: Girl, look how orange you are. Go home and scrub your face. As for the rest of it, what’s the point in wearing an unusual piece if no one can see it in pictures? Stop putting color on your face and start wearing it on your body.
Jessie Buckley in Vivienne Westwood
Well. That’s certainly… something, isn’t it? While we appreciate her quirky tastes, we don’t think Sexy Dojo Chic is likely to catch on.
Olivia Colman (in Dolce & Gabbana)
We’re impressed. Most people would look a mess in that much black satin, let alone a big floppy bow like that, but she looks pretty great. We’re not always fans of pantsuits that look like gowns or vice versa, but this works.
Joseph Quinn
He looks like he’s here to carry out a hit. We don’t hate it, and we’re not going to claim it’s too casual, but it does look kind of ’90s-dated to us.
Katy O’Brian
Girl, that’s not your dress. It shouldn’t be anybody’s dress because roughly 11,000 celebrities have worn some version of it in the last three years.
Lucy Boynton in Chanel
We’d hate this on just about any wearer under 85, but she has such a knack for super fussy, twee, retro styles, resulting in this, which looks like something The Queen Mother would’ve worn with a tiara. There are many things to dislike about the design, most notably the collar and sleeves, but the thing we hate most is the untucked, belted blouse.
Maria Bakalova in Self-Portrait
Cute and a little off-season. We hate the way the skirt and bodice marry.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste
We’re not fans of tricky skirts, but we really like this one for her. We’d have rec’d a jacket with it.
Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton
His suit is nice and he looks good in brown, but the jacket looks awfully blocky on him. Her dress is borderline tacky, but it’s nice to see her in something fun and sparkly. Her LV contract doesn’t always give her those options. Our only quibble is that the shade of green, while holiday appropriate, is a little harsh.
