Happy Halloween from Wicked co-stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who continue to treat the promo tour like an extended costume party.
We’re sorry for re-stating the obvious, but if you’re just joining us, these two have been ramping up the theme-dressing all year long, but now they’re in full-on cosplay mode. We’ll credit the design houses who have attempted to interpret the classic Glinda and Elphaba looks in high-fashion form, but the problem is, you really can’t do it without tipping over into simply mimicking the stage or film costumes.
Ariana Grande in Versace
It’s pretty, sure. We’d never suggest otherwise. But as we noted a time or two before, if you put this dress on literally anyone for literally any other event, someone is going to take a look at it and note that all she’d need is a tiara and a wand to complete the Glinda look. We’re actually impressed/relieved that she’s resisted the urge to sport them. The bustline is goofy, her makeup is unflattering and doesn’t work with her coloring, and that necklace, dazzling as it is, feels like an afterthought.
Cynthia Erivo in Thom Browne
Newp. Don’t really like this at all. It’s a creative and gorgeous Halloween costume but it’s entirely too gimmicky for a red carpet, in our opinion. Take away those hands and that head wrap and you’d have a pretty fabulous (if still very theme-y) gown, but the addition of both just renders this as a fantasy costume instead of high fashion.
