Lady Gaga hit the LA premiere red carpet for Joker: Folie à Deux in a look that tells us she’s trying to marry her prestige actress Oscar ambitions with the kind of punk comic book vibe that the film calls for. Has she been successful in blending these two styles? You tell us.

It’s as classic a grande dame-style gown as you’ll find anywhere and it almost certainly wasn’t designed with that wig or those boots in mind. Not that we have a problem with either styling choice. We like the idea of blending high style and counter-culture style in one red carpet look, but we tend to think the results here feel a little awkward. If nothing else, that stunning necklace absolutely shouldn’t be worn with this neckline. We don’t know… the whole approach feels not as thought-out as we assumed it would be, going by her previous film publicity tours. This isn’t a terrible look, but when we consider the phrase “Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn,” we feel like the promotional style should reflect that somehow. Are we being too picky? We’re asking.
