VMAs 2024: Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom

We are capricious sorts who contain multitudes, so it’s not difficult at all for us to hold several conflicting thoughts at the same time. It also helps that there are two of us, which means we are sometimes faced with a half-dozen competing ideas on someone’s red carpet choices. This wordy preamble is our way of saying that we think the way the press and cultural critics have treated Katy Perry’s disappointing career year (and to be fair, some questionably bad choices) displays elements of misogyny and ageism. People can get amazingly nasty when a female pop star flops, in our observation. On the other hand, we have to be honest and admit that we think her choice of outfit for the VMAs red carpet positively reeks of staleness and tryhard.

The VMAs is a place for dressing outrageously and seeking attention, so she’s completely appropriate in that regard. It’s also a place where most of the female attendees try to outdo each other in wearing as little as possible, so there’s certainly no issue with her showing off her impressive body work. But the design doesn’t evoke confidence or even strength. It implies a heaviness and dreariness that literally weighs her down. The aggressively wet styling is kind of off-putting. Not that any female star needs to dress like she’s here to hand out hugs, but we would think it smarter and more fabulous to show up for your Video Vanguard Award, in a year when the critics have been savaging you, looking joyful and confident, rather than depressed and torn apart.
