Your girl had herself a hell of a weekend. Challengers star Zendaya unveiled four tennis-themed looks at various photo calls and premieres for the film. Let’s assess.
IN LOUIS VUITTON AT THE CHALLENGERS PARIS PRESS EVENT
We remain a little unimpressed by her and Law Roach’s approach here. Theme dressing strikes us as a somewhat unsophisticated way to approach high fashion items. You’re picking things not because they’re fabulous or even because they suit you. Granted, very little looks bad on Zendaya, so she can make all of these looks sing. And to be fair, it’s not like you’d look at this and immediately thing “tennis.” Considering how celebrity fashion is currently covered by mainstream press (they can do no wrong while they’re wearing major advertisers) and on social media (they can do no wrong because of stans), there’s virtually no downside to theme dressing, but we’re still gonna bang our little drum in protest. Having said that, this is cute.

In fact, most of what she wore lately has been cute (with one exception). As we said, she can work just about anything and fortunately, this latest round of tennis-themed outfits are mostly restricted to color and form. This is just okay, however. The color isn’t great for her and we think the shininess brings it down.

Far be it for us to tell Law Roach how to do his job, but we would have sent her out in a string of tennis whites instead of constantly dressing her up in tennis ball colors. This is pretty and dramatic, the difference between the weight of the textiles is mitigated by how they’re used. The leather (?) bodice is tight to the body, but the chiffon (?) skirt has volume and layers.
IN LOEWE AT THE CHALLENGERS ROME PHOTO CALL
This is exactly the kind of dress she should’ve been wearing more on this campaign, in our opinion. It looks like the perfect melding of tenniswear and high fashion. Unfortunately, it was paired with those clown shoes. We’ve noted before that Law’s approach to theme-dressing is taking a lot from the worlds of drag and ballroom. These pumps would be hilariously perfect on Drag Race, but they utterly ruin this outfit and they make her look a little silly.
