The 20 Best- and Worst-Dressed Celebs at the 2024 Oscars
Tom + Lorenzo break down the highs (and lows) of the biggest night in film.

After a difficult year of strikes and box office uncertainty, the movers and shakers of the movie world all came together in Hollywood for the night they all try to pretend doesn’t matter, the Oscars. After an uncertain year for the industry, on a night where virtually no surprises were expected, the red carpet looks had a surprising elegance to them. Yes, even the ones that didn’t quite hit the mark. Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but the vibes were grateful and quietly celebratory, like everyone was just kind of happy to be a movie star on prom night. Let’s assess the choices!

Emma Stone Was Just as Surprised By Her Oscars 2024 Best Actress Win as You Were
The Poor Things actor edged out her Killers of the Flower Moon competitor Lily Gladstone to win her second Oscar in seven years.

Emma Stone provided one of the few surprises of Sunday’s Oscars 2024 when the Poor Things star won the best actress trophy—edging out Lily Gladstone, the Killers of the Flower Moon actor who would have become the first Indigenous or Native American person to win an Oscar for acting. Stone also beat out Annette Bening (Nyad), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) in the category.
“My dress is broken,” Stone said, stunned, after she took the stage. “I’m pretty sure it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she said, referring to Ryan Gosling’s musical number.

Kate Middleton’s 2024 Mother’s Day Photo ‘Killed’ After Associated Press Alleges the Image Was ‘Manipulated’
The Associated Press issued a “kill order” for the photo released by Kensington Palace on Sunday, citing concerns of manipulation

Photo and news agencies have pulled a new photo of Kate Middleton released by Kensington Palace due to suspicions of manipulation.
On Sunday, the palace released a photo for Mother’s Day in the U.K., featuring the Princess of Wales, 42, smiling at the camera as her three children — Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis — stood around her. The photo was taken by Prince William, 41, earlier this week at the family’s home in Windsor, according to the palace.

There’s an incredible story behind Cher’s iconic 1986 Oscars dress
There have been many iconic Oscars dresses over the years, from Julia Roberts’ vintage Valentino number and Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 pink Ralph Lauren gown to Jennifer Lawrence’s strapless voluminous dress by Raf Simons for Christian Dior Haute Couture – the most expensive Oscar dress of all time.
But none grabbed headlines quite as much as Cher’s iconic look from the 1986 Oscars. The headdress, the crop top, those abs and that sequin skirt, there was no denying it was an unusual look and she of course looked fabulous.

8 Female Fashion Designers On The Women Who Inspired Their Careers
Stella McCartney, Ganni’s Ditte Reffstrup, Rejina Pyo and more talk to ELLE UK about the women who changed their lives forever.

Have you ever heard of the ‘Glass Runway’? While the exact phrase may be foreign, its meaning reverberates down the halls of the fashion industry. The two words describe the phenomenon that while most of the people working in (and buying from) the industry are women, only 27% of major fashion houses are run by them.
This means that despite feeding and loving the fashion industry at both machinist and consumer level, women have limited say in what it ultimately creates.

‘I thank you when I was the only Black girl in that class when you saw me and you told me I was enough.’

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and delivered what might be the most joyful and emotive speeches of the night.
After winning the gong, presented by former Oscar winners Mary Steenburgen, Lupita Nyong’o, Jamie Lee Curtis, Rita Moreno and Regina King, for her role in The Holdovers – Randolph’s first Oscar nomination and first win – the star began her speech with: ‘God is so good.’

My mum died 11 years ago. Here’s what I’ve learned about grief
Advice if you, too, are grieving this Mother’s Day.

It’s taken me over a decade to begin understanding the complexities of grief. In the 11 years since my mum died, I’ve witnessed the full spectrum of how colourful the emotion can be. But there are certain times throughout the year that can be harder to bear than others.
Spring hits me like a ton of bricks every year. Mother’s Day feels like an overwhelming emotional assault; a barrage of advertisements, promotional emails, and dedicated TV specials that lasts for weeks.

Why I finally decided to learn to swim before I turned 30
Why so Black people fall into the stereotype, and how I overcame it.

Everyone: “What do you mean you can’t swim?”
Me: “I just can’t, it’s a bone density thing…”
Yes, I know. For a long time, I had convinced myself that the fact I never learned how to swim was down to my bone density. Growing up, I was always the girl who got picked first for school games. I was fast, stealthy and tenacious. I loved water, I lived near the beach in Lisbon, so by the time I got to my teens, the concept of not being good at swimming was as confusing to my big-headed self as it was to everyone else.

Oscars 2024: The Meaning Behind John Cena’s ‘Naked’ Moment
It’s not the first time the Oscars has seen some nudity

John Cena’s ‘naked’ moment at the 2024 Oscars might have caused hilarity from viewers and the audience, alike, but the nod to Oscars history has far more importance that the former wrestler being merely the butt of a joke (pun intended).

Ryan Gosling has delivered the Oscars moment we’ve waited weeks for, with his rendition of ‘I’m Just Ken’ at the 96th Academy Awards, and it resulted in an unexpected group singalong from his Barbie co-stars.
The star, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Oscars, began his performance sat in the audience of the Dolby Theatre, dressed in a bright fuchsia-coloured bedazzled pink suit from Gucci, accessorised with matching hued gloves, a black cowboy hat, and black sunglasses.

A Visibly Shocked Emma Stone Wins Best Actress at the 2024 Oscars
It was the biggest surprise of the entire show

“The women on this stage, you are all incredible, and the women in this category—Sandra, Annette, Carey, Lily—I share this with you. I’m in awe of you. It has been such an honor to do this all together, and I hope we continue to do more together,” Stone said. “The other night I was panicking, as you can, that maybe something like this could happen, and Yorgos told me: ‘Please take yourself out of it’—and he was right, because it’s not about me. It’s the team that came together to make something better than the sum of its parts. That’s the best part about making movies, is all of us together.”

How This Tibetan Community Is Modernizing a Centuries-Old Braiding Tradition
Thirty-five-year-old Yangram, who lives in northwestern Tibet, began braiding her sisters’ hair at the age of 12. The nomadic herding tribes that live here are known for the unique traditional style of 108 Braids, a reference to the 108 holy volumes of Tibetan Buddhism.
Once used as a form of communication—to share one’s relationship status or religious affiliation—108 Braids is now also a tribute to the region’s heritage. Once braided, hair is adorned with all manner of earthy ornaments, like pine cones, coral, and turquoise, each woven into the braids to denote a milestone in life.

Scientists Finally Discover Why Blueberries Are Blue
A fun fact indeed.

Sometimes, life throws you such a great fun fact you simply must share it with the world. This week, it’s the fact that blueberries aren’t actually blue. They just appear that way. And scientists just revealed how and why.
In a study published in February in Science Advances, researchers from the United Kingdom shared their findings on why blueberries and other blue-hued fruits appear to be that color to the human eye despite having a dark red hue on the fruit skin. (Think about if you mashed up a bunch of blueberries into a juice. That juice would be a deep reddish-purple, not blue.)

What does winning an Oscar even mean anyway?
A better question to ask than who wins the Oscar: Who benefits the most, win or lose?

Seldom is a career trajectory a straight line; for every Daniel Day-Lewis whose career remains ascendant after their first win, there’s a Leo, whose unforgettable performance didn’t necessarily translate to a career payoff. At times, the overexposure of an Oscar campaign can backfire; actresses like Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei have had to suffer through years or even decades of backlash for their Oscar wins. The backlash against Diablo Cody for … writing an Oscar-winning script while being a woman … was so intense that it not only wrecked her career for over a decade, but shut women out of winning the screenwriting category for a full 13 years.

Parenting advice you don’t need to stress about
According to experts.

With constantly changing frameworks and a community of people — online and off — who are quick to point out supposed flaws, there are so many standards to live up to. Aside from the thrum of social judgments, accusations of “wrong” parenting can have very real repercussions.

Are You a ‘Floor Person’? Why Lying on the Ground Feels So Good
For some, just a few minutes can quiet the mind.

As a child, Josh Patner became accustomed to stepping over his mom, who used to lie down in the kitchen whenever her mother-in-law would call.
“My grandmother would talk her ear off,” Mr. Patner, 61, recalled. To cope, his mother would “lie on the floor and hold the phone away from her head.” Mr. Patner’s father, also a fan of the floor, took a 20-minute nap under the family’s piano each night after work.
So it is unsurprising, perhaps, that Mr. Patner enjoys floor time at his home in Brooklyn or even at his friend’s places — in part to stretch and soothe his back (he has scoliosis), but also, he says, because it feels calming.

10 Things You Should Toss From Your Bedroom ASAP, According to Professional Organizers
Your bedroom is your sanctuary—here’s how to make sure it stays that way.

Your bedroom should feel like a respite from the world, one that allows you to unwind and recharge for the next day. But as clutter (and life) takes over, the space can start to feel less like the calming oasis we intend it to be. To help return your bedroom to the restful space you deserve, we asked professional organizers to share which items should be removed from your bedroom, stat.

How to Make Irish Coffee, Everyone’s Favorite Nightcap
When made correctly, sipping this after-dinner drink is a truly memorable experience.

Irish coffee is a classic—the flavors of coffee and whiskey complement each other perfectly in this hot drink. It sometimes gets a bad rap because it often isn’t made the right way: Some restaurants serve coffee and sugary Irish cream, coffee and flavored syrups, or a little whiskey poured into a basic cup of Joe and call it Irish coffee.
When it is made well, Irish coffee is a truly memorable experience—and one you’ll want to enjoy on the regular, not just on March 17. What’s more, Irish coffee is an easy dessert cocktail to make at home. And when sipped through a float of freshly whipped cream, it’s a delicious and elegant after-dinner drink.

I’ve Been Legally Blind for Decades — Here’s What It’s Like to Travel the World on My Own
Guiding Eyes for the Blind president Thomas Panek has been visually impaired since he was young, but that hasn’t stopped him from traveling the world.

I started to lose my sight as a young man. Even as a boy, I had trouble seeing at night. Turns out, I have a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa. It’s the equivalent of tunnel vision that turns to darkness at night. Then you can’t see in the day, except in the center, and eventually not at all. It’s a common form of blindness, not that blindness is common. It affects people as they age, and they end up needing reading glasses and bifocals. It just happened much quicker for me, and by the time I was about 18 to 20 years old, I was legally blind.
Nonetheless, I’ve always thrived on travel. I’ve always managed to go places on my own, but what makes my travels unique is that I’ve always done so with a guide dog, even before it was popular to have a service animal.

36 Hours in Asunción, Paraguay
For the adventurous traveler, the Paraguayan capital’s off-the-radar quality is its strongest asset.

Paraguay’s hot, humid capital doesn’t top many bucket lists. It lacks Rio de Janeiro’s spectacular setting and Buenos Aires’s cultural heft. Corruption and the legacy of dictatorship have kept it in a time warp of cobbled streets, moldering mansions and the odd horse-and-cart. Now, the good news: For the adventurous traveler, Asunción’s off-the-radar quality is its strongest asset. Tourists are met with a friendly curiosity they are unlikely to find in other South American capitals.
