Mariah, like so many songstresses (do people still use that word?) this weekend, had herself quite the little parade of fashion moments as she cycled through the Grammys red carpet tour. Like fellow songstress (we’re bringing it back) Dua Lipa, she used fashion to tell an epic tale of tragedy and triumph. Unlike Dua, hers had an extra chapter. A prologue, if you will.

This is great. It’s completely on brand for her, but it feels like a slightly freshened up take on her glittery, sexy, cutout-heavy style. It’s not pushing any envelopes and it’s not all that far off from her usual, but her hair and makeup look great, the dress looks easy and flattering on her, and we can’t find a thing to fault here.

Then this happened. There have been a rash of these old foundation garment looks on the red carpet of late and we can’t say we’re loving the return of this hoary old trend. Yes, that’s a pun. Come on, you’ve gotta give us that one. Anyway, this is terrible. The bodysuit offers no contrast to her coloring and that weird slinky bustle and half-assed skirt only make it look worse. Then, from the ashes of this tragic moment…

Her greatest triumph! Seriously, does she not look spectacular here? Again, the dress design isn’t exactly avant garde. We wouldn’t even call it fresh. But it’s the perfect Mimi dress. The hair, the makeup and the boobs all look spectacular.
