It’s taken us some time to fully get with The Bear star Ayo Edebiri’s style, which has always struck us as nascent. It’s early days in her career and the acclaim seems to have surprised even her (she noted recently that despite going to the Emmys she’s still renting her apartment and she’s just happy to have dental insurance). It seems to us that she’ll need some time to figure out what she wants, especially since her preferences skew toward the extremely low key end of the scale.
IN THE ROW AT THE CRITICS’ CHOICE AWARDS
She’s well suited to The Row, which will give her the kind of chic minimalism she prefers. Still, as much as we like the suit for her, we disagree with every other choice, from the shoes to the t-shirt to the hair, makeup and earrings. That seems to be where we disagree with her approach most: the styling. She picks good pieces and then does nothing with them.
IN LOUIS VUITTON AT THE EMMYS
This is definitely her best effort yet. The dress is weird, but that only means it’s more declarative than a lot of her other choices. In other words, it’s better to be weird than generic on the red carpet. You want to make an impression. That’s the entire point of them. Once again though, the styling takes it nowhere. Give this woman a cuff or a cocktail ring. Someone please talk her into a winged eye or a pair of hoops or sparkly shoes. ANYTHING.
