No preambles here. We’re gonna rip the Band-aid off right now, although we advise you to have an appropriate level of “Oh honey no” prepared.
Oh honey no. Look, as it was with Halle Bailey, so must it be with Melissa McCarthy. In other words, if you’re playing an iconic Disney character, a certain level of near cosplay is going to be on the menu for any promotional work. What we’d hoped to see from The Little Mermaid‘s Ursula was something along the lines of fabulous caftans and drag accessorizing on this publicity tour. It seemed the most appropriate way to go and we thought she would have some fun working that look. We can see that her team probably thought the same thing – after all, the fringe, the jewelry, and those insane gloves all scream “drag queen.” But the results are extremely questionable. That dress is just not doing it. First, it would appear that she’s wearing it backwards, given how it looks on the model below. No crime in that, but there’s a fine line separating caftan from “dress that needs a belt” and this hangs like a dress that needs a belt. We might be convinced on the fringed scarf, but the fringe on the hem looks awful to us. And finally, we don’t think rendering everything in the same blue was the best way to go here. Let’s see more sparkle and outrageousness next time. This one just feels awkward to us.
