2023 Cannes Film Festival Gown Rundown

Posted on May 23, 2023

Darlings, we’ve got quite the little backlog of gownery thanks to our ongoing coverage of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, so we figured we’d clean out our folders before the next batch came through. Here are the Cannes gowns we haven’t quite gotten around to judging. Come judge them with us!

Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton at the FIREBRAND Premiere

It’s uniquely pretty and extremely well suited to her, but we wish it didn’t match her skin tone.

Ashley Graham in Dolce & Gabbana at the CLUB ZERO Premiere

Sure, it looks like she wrapped herself in a duvet and hit the red carpet, but it’s designed to look like that. It’s fun and exuberant.

Gigi Hadid in Zac Posen at the FIREBRAND Premiere

Meh. An underwhelming design in a truly awful color.

Jennie Kim in Chanel Couture at THE IDOL Premiere

It’s a pretty little basic ballerina dress that’s more or less ruined by that bustline detail, which looks shoved into place.

Julia Fox in Nicolas Jebran at THE IDOL Premiere

We can hear this. It’s deafening.

Mia Wasikowska in Louis Vuitton at the CLUB ZERO Premiere

The top looks like something you wear for a workout and the skirt is attached to it in a ridiculously unflattering way.

Naomi Campbell in Chanel Couture at the FIREBRAND Premiere

There is nothing to argue with here.

Naomie Ackie in Valentino at the Chopard Trophy Awards

Simple, but very dramatic. The collar and the braids are what make the look.

Natalie Portman in Dior Couture at THE ZONE OF INTEREST Premiere

As we said earlier, her approach to fashion is very no-nonsense, get-the-job-done, even if the results are sparkly and glamorous. She knows what works for her and how far she’ll put up with it and makes all of her choices accordingly. This is pretty and well-accessorized.

Sabrina Elba in Elie Saab Couture at the FIREBRAND Premiere

Tacky and hellaciously overdesigned. It gets worse as you scroll down.

Sofia Carson in Elie Saab Couture at the KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON Premiere

Gorgeous, old-school glam. Love the length of those gloves. Too many up-to-the-pits gloves on the red carpets lately.
