It’s time for us to CLEAR THE DECKS, PEOPLE! This is not a drill! The Oscars are in less than a week. We can’t be fussing around with some other awards ceremony when there’s prepping and stretching and supplies to be secured for the big night (in our case, probably whiskey and ice cream). Time for all y’all Independent Spirit Awards stragglers to line up in front of the judging circle to hear our final thoughts on all of your looks. If you’ve missed any of our coverage of this year’s looks, here is a handy link for you to click because we’re so damn thoughtful.
Ayo Edebiri in Oscar de la Renta
It’s a potentially fun and glam frock, but we don’t think the styling does anything for it. The hair and makeup in particular feel like they go with an entirely different kind of outfit.
Danielle Deadwyler in Chanel
This is really cute, but the mismatched whites are giving us eye twitches.
Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union in Gucci
He looks perfect. We like her jacket but that skirt is terrible.
Emily Hampshire in Carolina Herrera
Is this Emily Hampshire IN Carolina Herrera or Emily Hampshire AS Carolina Herrera? It’s a classic look, but it feels a little bit like cosplay.
Haley Lu Richardson in Rodarte
That was a very unexpected scrolldown. We kind of appreciate the fakeout, but we still can’t shake the idea that this would be better as a dress. The hem length of those pants should not be paired with platform shoes.
Jamie Lee Curtis in Libertine
This is pretty fabulous, so long as you’re not weirded out by seeing hundred of faces staring back at you.
Jenny Slate in Thom Browne
This suit needs to be permanently retired. Have some sort of ceremony if you have to, stylists. This exact look has seen too many red carpets. Admittedly, she looks pretty great in it.
Jodie Turner-Smith in Elie Saab Couture
Your girl did it again. She looks like some sort of fabulously fashionable bird. And we’re pretty sure this would look silly on most other wearers.
Sorry, no. Love her, but that pearl thing is tacky-looking over a bra.
Melanie Lynskey in Safiyaa
That’s a spectacular dress for her. The color looks great on her and the fit is perfect. Love the makeup and the earrings, not entirely sold on the slick hair.
Mia Goth in John Galliano
We honestly think the headband makes the whole look. She’s perfectly suited to the gown, which looks great on her, even if it does combine a bra top and a cowl neck.
Michaela Jaé Rodriguez in Lena Erziak Couture
Perhaps not the most practical dress in the world, but it looks really cute on her.
Molly Shannon in Christian Siriano
Simple, classic and very flattering.
Patricia Arquette in Jonathan Simkhai
She seems to prefer a lot of coverage utilizing some of the tackiest textiles you’ll find anywhere. The shape is great, the fabric is not.
Regina Hall in Andrew Kwon
This gives off a weird vibe of being both bridal and baptismal at the same time.
Sarah Bolger in Greta Constantine
Gorgeous color and shape. We go back and forth on whether the gold accents and red mani-pedi are too harsh or exactly enough. We’re leaning toward the latter.
Sheryl Lee Ralph in Tony Ward Couture
This is a lot of fun and the colors look great on her. It looks like the skirt got a little ruffled around the waist and we wonder if a belt might’ve been a good idea here.
Stephanie Hsu in Khoon Hoi
This is pretty fierce, but it really doesn’t feel like a red carpet dress, let alone one for the Independent Spirit Awards.
Taylor Russell in Loewe
This girl has some serious fashion bona fides. The difficulty level on this dress is astronomical, which means the fact of her pulling it off and making it look easy is a huge credit to her skills. We love the stark hair and “bare” face with it. It all feels very modern.
Taylour Paige in Acne Studios
It’s an interesting concept and we love the color, but ultimately it looks like she washed up on shore in it.
