Good Lady Cate has done it again – twice! The TÁR hit the red carpets for the Producers Guild Awards and the SAG Awards this weekend, and she stuck to her awards season schtick of re-wearing old gowns that she’s worn in the past. This time, however, she reworked each of them to the point where they’re nearly unrecognizable. Let’s assess!

At the Producers Guild of America Awards in LOUIS VUITTON

Here’s Cate wearing a Louis Vuitton gown from the Resort 2018 collection to the Dubai Film Festival in 2017:

And here’s Cate this weekend at the PGAs, working a decidedly different version.

It’s … different! We can’t say it’s an improvement on the original design, though. It looks like what it is: a gown with the skirt hacked off. This could have been a cool look, because we think most of the aspects of that top could really work with a pair of pants, but that big, hanging half-skirt thing is too oddly shaped. It’s distracting and the outfit has almost none of the impact of the original.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards in ARMANI PRIVÉ

Here’s how Cate originally wore this gown at the 2014 Golden Globes:

And just for completion’s sake, here’s her wearing the same gown at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

And here she is at the SAG Awards this weekend, wearing an extremely repurposed version:

And by “repurposed” we mean “basically had an entire other gown made.” While we support her thrifty ways and we don’t mind when she gets creative about repurposing these looks, we feel like it’s a bit of a shame to just rip apart a custom Armani gown like this. Why not just have Armani make you a new gown? It’s not like this is “sustainable” fashion in any way, so why bother destroying a perfectly good gown in order to make a completely different perfectly good gown? Oh, well. We suppose these are hers to do with as she pleases – or at the very least, the design houses who lent them to her don’t mind the re-use of them. She certainly looks gorgeous here. But she looked gorgeous in the original gown as well. Like we said, we support the rewearing, but we cringe a little at how much she’s changing these garments from their original designs. Kinda defeats the whole point of a rewear if you’re basically having a new outfit made.
