Princess Cathy Invades Boston in Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Burberry

Posted on December 01, 2022

Prince William and Princess Catherine launched their long-awaited U.S. visit to award the Earthshot Prize (and also, unofficially, to shore up international support for the monarchy at a time of upheaval). Unfortunately, this tour got off to as rocky a start as the last one did because a racism scandal erupted at Buckingham Palace when Susan Hussey, the late Queen’s Lady in Waiting and the newly appointed Lady of the Royal Household cornered Ngozi Fulani, head of the charity Sistah Space, at a Camilla-hosted event, touched her hair, and asked her what part of Africa she was from. Fulani is British-born and this scandal is probably not over yet. In other news, Cathy did not disappoint on the fashion front. And by that we don’t mean that she pushed any envelopes, reinvented any wheels, or served up anything jaw-droppingly chic. No, it was just good, sturdy, royal fashion; the kind the public expects to see from her. Let’s nitpick it!

The Prince and Princess of Wales Arrive in Boston

The first thing that struck us about this look is how tight it is on her. It’s not scandalous or anything, but she looks like she can barely move in that jacket and that’s not really like her. She’s a Princess who likes herself a tight fit, but we have to wonder just how small this suit must be. The color looks great. We like that she’s been playing with more accentuated shoulders lately, but we don’t think they work that well with a turtleneck. She looks like she’s shrugging in every picture.

It’s the return of Christmas Cathy! Again: it’s not Vogue-cover chic, but it is exactly what you’d expect a member of the British Royal Family to wear for an outing. Lorenzo thought this was kind of mumsy but Tom thought it was perfectly on brand for her and the waist detail gives it some interest. Her accessorizing remains a little precious. The matchy shoes work, but that doll bag looks a little silly.

Serving up a little royal coat porn. We wonder if she breaks out in hives if she wears contrasting colors.

Except for the part about the crowd booing them and chanting “USA” when they appeared on the Jumbotron, we suspect this was Kate’s favorite part of her day. She always was a sporty girl and we suspect it was a rare pleasure for her to take in a basketball game courtside. We’ve seen the jacket before and it looks fine, but wearing stiletto courtside (especially ones as painful-looking as those) is overkill.
