We gave spotlight posts to Janelle and Taraji and Keke and Lizzo, but it’s time to round up some of the other notable attendees of the 2022 BET Awards and assess their looks, quick n’ dirty style.
Ari Lennox in Nedret Taciroglu
Credit where it’s due: We tend to think black lace gowns on the red carpet are dreary and generic almost 100 percent of the time, but this is sexy and interesting to look at. The velvet adds a whole new dimension to it as a textile.
Big Freedia in Cosmo & Donato
Happy Pride, Miss BF.
Billy Porter in Rick Owens
Love the hair and makeup, but we’re sorry to say that ensemble is silly and dreary at the same time. Billy, you’re trying to make taupe knit separates look edgy and queer and not even you can manage that one. Also, you left it on the hanger too long, girl.
Chloe Bailey in Nicolas Jebran
She looks impeccably gorgeous. It’s a weird thing to focus on, but we love the simple glamour of the manicure.
Cynthia Erivo in Louis Vuitton
No, Cynthia. Not even you. The textile looks a little too kitchen curtain for us and the shape is goofy. The belt doesn’t go at all.
Halle Bailey in Mônot
It combines the two trends we dislike the most: wide plunging necklines and side cutouts. Worse, it shows just how bad they can look, especially when you combine them. If nothing else, this could’ve used some more jewelry to distract from the design.
Jack Harlow
We guess we have to respect him for mounting a protest on behalf of his pal Lil Nas X, who’s currently airing a beef with BET, but we’re not sure he’s the guy to be doing it in this time and place. In other words, regardless of whether he or Lil Nas has a point, being the white guy at the Black media gala protesting the Black media host is … well, it’s a choice. In shallower news, we can’t help but note how everything fits perfectly and his shoes are gorgeous.
Jussie Smollett
Um… okay. We guess the rehabilitation tour is kicking off.
Lena Waithe in Casablanca
Absolutely gorgeous suit. She always finds such great interpretations of the suit, combining elements of menswear and womenswear at the same time.
Marsai Martin in Dolce & Gabbana
We hate fringe, but we couldn’t possibly argue that she looks bad. We’ve been seeing a lot of really bad platform shoes lately, but those are fab.
Mary J. Blige in Tony Ward Couture
We don’t love it for her, but we can’t fault the design – except for that one rick-rack-looking strap, which is really distracting.
Paula Patton
Looks a little bridesmaidy.
