No, really. Not only that, but it was one of the most on-point ensembles of the night. Kittens, allow us to introduce to you a true Gilded Age dandy and eccentric, Evander Berry Wall, known in his day as “King of the Dudes.”

A New York socialite born in 1861, Wall inherited over $2 million before he turned 22 and apparently spent it freely on clothes that shocked, surprised and delighted his contemporaries (“dude” being 19th century slang synonymous with “dandy”).  As Wikipedia helpfully informs, he was dubbed King of the Dudes when he “strode into a bar clad in gleaming boots of patent leather that went to his hips” during the blizzard of 1888.

We also love Emma for taking this opportunity not to pay homage to robber barons or delicate socialite ladies of the time, but to celebrate a true sartorial weirdo and a legendary lover of fashion. The look is goofy, but that’s the entire point of it. We love every little detail, from the absurd top hat to the watch fob to the patent leather boots. No notes. Pure perfection. This is what the Met Gala is all about.
